Instant Heirloom

Gown3At my previous job, I learned about a fantastic calligrapher, Grace Connell, who creates gorgeous embroidered appliques for wedding gowns that contain the bride’s name and wedding date. I asked her to make something similar for the christening gown my daughters each wore. You can see at the end how beautifully each applique turned out (you’ll need to look closely, since the embroidery is a subtle ivory-on-ivory). The gown was pretty before; now it’s an heirloom. In fact, one of my sisters is due with her first child in March and if she has a girl, I really want the baby to wear it, and for her to add her daughter’s name and  date, too.

The appliques cost $150—which I know can be more than the dress itself!—but if you’re looking for a very special keepsake, this is it. (No christening gown in your family? Grace appliques pillow shams, too—and would consider other items, too.)
