Kids’ Jewelry Warning
It might be a good idea to stealthily take away your kids’ metal costume jewelry. The Associated Press tested 103 pieces of children’s jewelry made in China and available for sale in the U.S. and found shockingly high levels of cadmium—a dangerous metal that can cause cancer and kidney disease—in 12 of the pieces. These products had at least 10 percent cadmium by weight and one reportedly came in at 91 percent. The belief is that manufacturers are substituting cadmium for lead, another toxic chemical that was found in high levels in children’s jewelry. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating. Until we know more, it’s best to keep metal trinkets away from your kids.
