Friday Night Movies

pfThis Week’s Big-Screen Goody:

If you have a little girl, you’ve probably known for a while that The Princess and the Frog (rated G) opens nationally today–and if you didn’t, get ready for the begging to begin. I was very excited when I first heard Disney was returning to the days of its hand-drawn “princess” movies à la Snow White and The Little Mermaid. And to top if off, the film features the first African-American princess. I have to admit, though, that I was a bit disappointed.

Being from the South, some of the characters (especially those missing multiple teeth) made me cringe. I was also surprised that Disney’s much-hyped first-ever African-American princess spent more than half of the movie not in human form (spoiler alert: she’s a frog). *sigh* The good news is most kids won’t pick up on any of this. They’ll probably love it and add all the cute dolls and toys to their Christmas wish lists. And in the end, maybe I’m just being overly sensitive. When you see it, let me know what you think by posting a comment below.

We saw The Princess and the Frog today and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My husband and daughter did too. Our favorite character was Ray, the lightning bug with oh…I’d estimate four teeth and an awesome Cajun accent. We will certainly buy this one when it comes out. It had great music and lots of laughs. I’m from Georgia and I wasn’t bothered, offended, etc. by any of the stereotypical characters in the movie :)

My girls loved it and so did I. I took them this past Saturday, dressed them up as princess Tiana, which was a hit. My 17 month old was so excited she danced in the isle to the music. Loved the characters, the story line was awesome and inspiring. I will definitely get the movie.

[...] I would have been happy if any of the movies won–a little less for the princess (I have some issues with the Disney release). All the animated films were great this year. But at this point, [...]
