I was having difficulty getting my 19 month old to brush his teeth. He would just suck the toothpaste of the brush and declare himself “all done”. I starting using his natural inclination to mimic mommy & daddy to our advantage. Once we started brushing our teeth together as a family he immediately began to attempt to properly brush his teeth & is even letting me assist him (something he used to throw a fit about). Now he’s actually getting his teeth clean & without it turning into a battle of wills.

My 3 year old son likes to challenge his Mommy. Time outs usually just riles him up more, so I bought some blank garage sale stickers (the little circle ones) and drew smiley faces and frowny faces on them and started charting! We have just been putting frowny faces on when he is misbehaving and smiley ones to cover up the frowny faces when he redeems himself. I am also planning on making him a sticker chart with activities from our daily routine. For example, the morning will have, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth, get seatbelt on before I ask and he will either get a smiley or frowny face for each thing. I’m hoping it will make our mornings go more smoothly. I will tell you that this has worked much better than anything else. He really likes the visual reminder that he has either been good or bad. If he has frowny faces, he works really hard to get rid of them (like he’ll get the dogs food without us asking, or set the table with silverware and napkins, etc…) Who knew stickers could be such a motivational tool?

My best mama tip is if you want your infant to sleep a little longer while you do some chores, play bills or just catch up on the latest magazine is put your nightgown or anything that smells like you by their head. It always worked for my kids and I got those extra minutes to just relax and enjoy being a mama.
