Insurance Coverage for Autism

The financial burden of autism treatment can be staggering for families, and yet most health insurance doesn’t cover it. Today the Autism Acceleration Treatment Act was introduced in the House of Representatives, and a similar version was introduced in the Senate last month. The federal legislation, which calls for increased funding for scientific research, treatment, and services, also requires insurance companies to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders, including coverage of applied behavior analysis therapy (ABA). While ten states have already enacted autism insurance reform legislation, most state insurers are still allowed to exclude coverage for these critical services, which can cost $50,000 a year.
