Community Traditions

These days, squeezing a few minutes into your hectic, over-scheduled life to meet the new neighbors can feel like a challenge, never mind finding the time to really get to know them. But having a strong community support system can be vital, especially if you’re a parent. That’s why we loved the idea behind this New York Times article, about one community’s monthly potluck dinner that’s been bringing neighbors of all ages together for years. It’s nothing super planned or formal, just an easy way for friends to see each other on a regular basis, and it got us wondering- do any of you do something similar  in your community? If your neighborhood has  any sort of tradition that brings you all together to create a sense of community, we’d love to hear it- your story could end up in Parents Magazine. So please share!

This is exactly what our neighborhood does only we have weekly Wednesday night dinners during the summer. These dinners are often potluck, but can solely be the hosts responsibility. The atmosphere is uber relaxed, just a nice opportunity for adults to get together. It’s one less meal the parents have to worry about during the week, and the kids are all coralled in one place playing until their hearts are content. Shortly after September begins the weekly dinners become monthly get-togethers that are a little more planned. Each family takes a month & hosts an event usually corresponding with that month’s holiday. Then once it hits late spring, we begin our weekly dinners.

My neighborhood (subdivsion) has annual halloween parade going around the walking path, annual garage sale, and annual spring egg hunt. It is a lot of fun and it brings the 225 house subdivsion together.

We have a annual community garage sale at the end of summer. It was a huge turn out this year and I met many neighbors.

We host an annual pumpkin-carving party a few days before Halloween. During Christmas, we all look at lights together in a spectacular neighborhood or take the Niles Christmas train. In the summer, we take turns hosting Movie Night. One neighbor borrows all the equipment for an outdoor screening from work, and the rest of us vote on a flick, kick back and enjoy. Everything is ALWAYS potluck, and clean-up is a community effort too. I *heart* my neighbors!
