Good Deed Friday: The Fresh Air Fund
On Monday, my boyfriend and his entire company took a bus up to volunteer at The Fresh Air Fund—a program that provides free summer vacations to NYC children from low-income communities. The volunteers did arts and crafts and had fun water-balloon fights with the kids. The Fresh Air Fund has a camp (like the one Kris volunteered at) in upstate NY, or any family around the country can volunteer to open your home and host an inner-city boy or girl between the ages of 6 and 18 for two weeks or more. Last year, close to 5,000 children visited volunteer host families in 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. So if you can’t imagine growing up without ever picking flowers, or running through the sprinkler, or laying under the stars, think about opening your home and your backyard to a kid for the summer!
