Scholastic Gives Back

I’m going to guess that you all watched American Idol last night because…well…why wouldn’t you? So you know that for every one of your votes (whether they were for the amazing Jordin Sparks or Phil "how many weeks does he have left on this show?" Stacy), American Idol sponsors will donate money to the Charity Projects Entertainment Fund to provide relief for children living in poverty in the U.S. and Africa.

In partnership with American Idol, Scholastic has created this awesome site that you should definitely check out with your kids—and tell their teachers about it too. It has activities and classroom lessons (including this cool poster to the left) to educate students about global issues and how they can get involved in helping their community. It also has a super fun magazine your kids can download called Teen Citizen, which profiles other young role models who’ve taken action—including 2003 American Idol runner-up, Clay Aiken.

After you visit the Scholastic site, watch the star-studded Idol Gives Back show tonight, when you’ll have the chance to make your own donation to this great cause. Ellen Degeneres will be co-hosting with Ryan Seacrest, and they’ll be joined by: Bono, Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Earth, Wind & Fire, Il
Divo, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Josh Groban with the African
Children’s Choir, Jack Black, Helen Mirren, Rascal Flatts, Quincy
Jones, Carrie Underwood, Annie Lennox and many more!! Definitely worth watching—especially since it’ll be a perfect (and entertaining) way to start a conversation with your kids about charity and giving back.
