Great Family Films

The weather is cold and dreary, which means it’s the perfect time of year to snuggle on the couch with your family and watch a great flick. In the
February issue of FamilyFun, we featured 40 fun family films. Some of my family’s personal favorites: The Princess Bride (“As you wish!”), Mulan (we can’t help but sing along to “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”), and Arsenic and Old LaceĀ (a great introduction to classic comedies).

What are your family go-to films?

My 5-year-old and I just watched “Babe,” and it was a big hit–nothing too scary or violent. We also love “Mary Poppins” and “Bedknobs and Broomsticks.”

We love Young Frankenstein, School of Rock, Elf, and actually Groundhog’s Day. My kids love that movie as much as we do, and these are all films any age could enjoy. My kids also adore any Miyazaki film, such as Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo. They are incredible films and mesmerize children and grown-ups alike.

At Christmastime, we watch an old chestnut, Meet Me in Saint Louis, with Judy Garland. It’s beautifully filmed, has some great songs, including “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and lots of very funny and sweet moments. Dumbo was a big favorite of my son when he was younger; I just watched recently Cinderella, a favorite of mine during my childhood and was amazed at how beautiful it was–very stylized and whimsical–shows what incredible effects creative artists could achieve before the days of computer-generated animation.
