Celebrity Maternity Style: Who Nails It (and How to Get It!)

Monday, February 9th, 2015

Blake Lively maternity styleWho is the best-dressed pregnant celeb?

You may remember a recent UK poll that showed people admire Keira Knightley’s pregnancy style over even Kate Middleton’s. (I respectfully disagree—you can’t top perfection!)

Now there’s a new published list that claims a different celeb deserves the throne. The top spot on the best-dressed bumps list, according to online retailer Zulily (which just released the ranking in association with its maternity fashion week—hello, discounts!), goes to (drumroll)… Blake Lively!

Of course, new-mama Blake’s maternity style was much discussed—and coveted—during her pregnancy. But does she deserve to top the list? You tell me!

Here’s the full list in order, according to Zulily:

1. Blake Lively
2. Kristen Bell
3. Kate Middleton (Ed note: She’s my own pick for best maternity style anywhere, ever!)
4. Carrie Underwood
5. Jennifer Love Hewitt
6. Tamera Mowry
&. Kourtney Kardashian (What would any arbitrary list of celebs be without at least one Kardashian?)
8. Ali Larter
9. Shakira (Great maternity style, and a world-changing baby shower? Yes, I’m a huge fan!)
10. Zooey Deschanel

Interesting—nary a Knightley on the list. Maybe Zulily is not fond of bug-printed frocks, even if they are Chanel. Maybe here in the U.S., we’re not as over-the-moon about Keira as were respondents to the U.K.-based poll that bestowed the recent honor. Or maybe we just haven’t seen enough yet from the star, who only announced her pregnancy in mid-December.

Of course this is hardly a science, and it’s all just plain fun—but I do love maternity style spotting!

Now let me know what you think: Who’s your pick for best-dressed pregnant celeb?

The 10 Best Celebrity Pregnancies of 2014

Monday, December 15th, 2014

Kate Middleton pregnantI don’t know about you, but I shut my brain off around this time of year. All I want is a cup of spiked hot cocoa, a fire in the fireplace, the Mariah Carey holiday Pandora station—and a bunch of year-end fluff on the Internet. If you’re anything like me, I have a present for you: a list of the top 10 celebrity pregnancies of 2014! No, this list is not scientific in any way, and there’s no methodology to report. But there were sure a lot of pregnant stars who kept me entertained this year, and now seems like a plenty good time to reflect on their stories. So grab that mug of hot cocoa and come along with me for the fun of it, won’t you?

10. Kourtney Kardashian
What would any arbitrary list of celebrities be without a Kardashian? The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star just gave birth to her third child—a boy!—with boyfriend Scott Disick.

9. Jill Duggar
The 19 Kids and Counting star got pregnant almost immediately following her June wedding, announcing her pregnancy on August 20—even before the end of her first trimester. More time for us to follow the journey on Instagram, thank you very much!

8. Carrie Underwood
The country star shared her pregnancy announcement with her fans on social media on Labor Day, and has since shared us given us some totally relatable candid moments. Yes, we all know about pregnancy crying fits too, sister!

7. Eva Mendes
The star had a baby with epic dreamboat Ryan Gosling this year. Need we say more?! Sadly, we didn’t have too much time to track this celebrity pregnancy: Rumors only broke in the star’s final months of pregnancy.

6. Zoe Saldana
Completely the opposite of the Kardashian-style approach, this mama-to-be makes our list for the mystery surrounding her pregnancy (and now, quite possibly, birth!). She’s kept mostly quiet throughout… even though we have much reason to believe she’s having twins!

5. Alicia Keys
In a year of naked celebrity baby bump photos galore, we’re adding a star to the list for a belly-baring shot with an excellent cause: the singer’s own #wearehere movement for social justice.

4. Blake Lively
This gorgeous star makes our list for becoming nothing short of a maternity fashion icon from right out of the gate. We’re taking notes!

3. Mila Kunis
We had a lot of fun along with Ashton Kutcher’s future wife during her pregnancy, didn’t we? The outspoken star always had something conversation-sparking to say, from her remarks about epidurals, to that famous pregnancy rant!

2. Chelsea Clinton
A grandbaby for the presidential family! After being pregnant much 2014, the former first daughter delivered her daughter, Charlotte, in September.

1. Kate Middleton
What’s more exciting than another royal baby on the way? Although barely showing, the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting her second child with Prince William. As with Kate’s first pregnancy, the palace was forced to make the announcement early as the duchess suffered from acute morning sickness. And that early annoucnement gives us plenty of time to look forward with excitement to her expected April 2015 delivery!

Boy or Girl? Kourtney Kardashian Is Expecting a…

Monday, December 8th, 2014

Kourtney Kardashian gender revealKourtney Kardashian is about to be outnumbered.

The pregnant E! star, who already has a son and a daughter with partner Scott Disick, announced on Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons that she’s going to have a second baby boy.

“I’m so happy to be having a boy,” she said. “It’s going to be perfect for our family.”

Kourtney’s nearly 5-year-old son Mason participated in the big reveal (as did ubiquitous sister Kim). Kim filmed the whole thing while Mason showed the family a colorful item that corresponded to the gender news: “Mason ran in here with the blue stick. There was a red star or a blue star,” Kourtney said.

(The gender reveal trend, of course, has popped up in the form of reveals by way of cakes filled with icing, balloons hidden in a box, or other pink or blue surprises.)

Evidently little Mason had wanted another sister along with 2-year-old Penelope, but auntie Khloe helped him find enthusiasm for a little brother. “Girls don’t like aliens and Lego guys,” she said. “When you have a brother you can say ‘Look at all my Lego guys, brother.’ You get to be rough and you can boss him around because you’re the older one.” (Is that how it works?!)

Congrats to Kourtney on baby number three to-be!

Maternity Style Tips: Designer Rachel Pally’s Bump-Flaunting Do’s and Don’ts

Wednesday, November 12th, 2014

Kim Kardashian may have put it best when she said, “Pregnancy style is hard.”

It is hard, you guys! I found this to be especially true in my twin pregnancy, when I got so big so fast that I had very few wardrobe options left by the time I got to about 24 weeks.

I made do with a bunch of staples from Old Navy, which were boring but affordable and easily accessorized. And I’ve written here many times too about my handful of pieces from designer Rachel Pally, which were splurgier—though I got them all on sale—but were truly statement making, and helped me feel like myself.

I’m not the only fan, of course. You might even say that stars are just like me! (Ahem.) Preggers celebs like Kourtney Kardashian and Vanessa Lachey have recently stepped out wearing the designer. (That’s an Instagram pic from Lachey’s baby shower.)

Because Rachel has pretty much nailed maternity style—and because I’m totally crushing on her—I reached out to her for her takes on how to dress a burgeoning bump to perfection.

Here are Rachel Pally’s do’s and don’ts for maternity style.

DO:

Pally advises dressing in such a way that still feels true to your sense of personal expression as much as possible—even though your body may be all new. “Do dress like yourself. Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to adopt an entirely new style,” she says. Try incorporating a few splurge-y pieces that make you feel amazing along with affordable basics that resemble pieces you’d wear anyway.

Embrace sexy! Make your non-maternity wardrobe work for you by continuing to wear your favorite, statement-making accessories and—if you’re comfortable in them—heels. Pally wore leather leggings throughout much of her pregnancy. You can be sexy and pregnant!

If possible, work some of your non-maternity pieces in to your maternity wardrobe, she says. With my twin bump, there was no way I could wear any of my old pants or dresses, but a fave blazer or cardigan from my pre-pregnancy days made me feel stylish—and saved money to boot.

DON’T:

Don’t dress in billowy clothes. Instead, it can be much more flattering to dress in bump-skimming pieces that flaunt your shape. “Don’t try to hide the bump,” under loose-fitting gear, she says. “It only makes you look big, not pregnant,” she says. Oh yes, ladies: Work that gorgeous bump!

Don’t let your unfamiliar bod get you down. (You’re making a human being in there after all—you’re a super hero!) If you look pulled together, you might find it even elevates your mood. So if you’re up for it, have fun with your maternity dressing. “Don’t resort to wearing yoga pants or leggings every day,” she says. “Keep it polished and you will feel so much better.”

Now tell me: What’s your fave maternity style tip?

Kardashian Baby Bump Comparison: Kourtney vs. Kris

Friday, August 8th, 2014

In honor of Throwback Thursday (and of the trend of recreating old family shots) reality star Kourtney Kardashian posted naked pictures of her sporting her first baby bump with boyfriend Scott Disick—and of her mom, Kris Jenner similarly posed from a decades-ago pregnancy.

It seems to be a hot trend amongst celebrity moms-to-be to pose for nude bump shots and share them with the world: Christina Aguilera just did it, and Demi Moore, Britney Spears, Cindy Crawford, and Jessica Simpson also showed it all, often splashed across a magazine cover.

But celebs are the only moms-to-be I know who are following this trend—I haven’t seen or heard of a single dare-to-bare bump shot amongst my entire mom cohort.

Tell us: Did you pose for a bare bump shot? And did you share it on your Twitter feed?

If you’re looking for great info about creating your own tasteful bump shot, check out our tips here. And don’t forget to like Everything Pregnancy on Facebook to keep up with the very latest in pregnancy-related news.
