Take THIS to Reduce Your Risk of Preeclampsia

Tuesday, April 8th, 2014

If you’re like I was when I was pregnant, I was reading everything about pregnancy that I could get my hands on. It was great to be informed, but at times I thought I’d drive myself crazy trying to self-diagnose what I was feeling after reading all of the various ways pregnancies can be complicated (for the record I developed gestational diabetes but otherwise had a healthy pregnancy, and a very healthy son).

One of the big baddies is preeclampsia, a condition usually occurring after 20 weeks of pregnancy and characterized by high blood pressure, protein in the urine, liver disease and blood-clotting abnormalities. Nearly seven million pregnant women suffer from it a year (including stars like Angelina Jolie, Faith Hill and Jennifer Lopez and rumor has it Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears had it too), and it’s the leading cause of death in pregnant women.

When a pregnant woman develops preeclampsia in the second trimester, her infant often must be delivered prematurely to avoid severe maternal complications, like stroke (similar to the eclampsia death on Downtown Abbey).

But there’s a silver lining to this Debbie Downer of a disease. To prevent the dangerous disorder, The U.S. Preventative Service Task Force is recommending 81 milligrams of low-dose aspirin daily—after 12 weeks of gestation—for pregnant women at high risk. Women are considered high risk if they’ve had preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy, are expecting multiples, or if they have a history of diabetes, hypertension or kidney disease.

This recommendation follows other medical organizations like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Heart Association , which have also advised that high-risk women use low-dose aspirin.

However, the task force also recommends that expectant women with multiple moderate-risk factors may also benefit from low-dose aspirin. These risks include obesity, a family history of preeclampsia, women older than 35, and African-American women.

Research shows that “low-dose aspirin every day lowers the risk of preeclampsia by 24 percent,” says Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, the co-vice chair of USPSTF. “And it lowers the risk of pre-term birth by 14 percent.”

As always, consult your doctor before taking any medicine—including over-the-counter drugs—while pregnant.

Pregnant with TWINS & Being Belly Bashed? Not Cool!

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014

Chris Hemsworth’s gorgeous wife Elsa Pataky—who is seven months pregnant with twins—was working it on the Oscars red carpet. The Fast & Furious 6 star was totally owning her bump, which was proudly on display in an eye-catching teal custom-made Elie Saab embellished gown. She looked like she was having a blast posing beside her hunky husband (Who wouldn’t? Um, hello, he’s Thor for a reason!). I’m sure she was savoring the big night out, which will likely be few and far between once the twins join big sister India, 21 months.

Then E!’s Fashion Police had to go and burst her precious mama-to-be bubble by making fun of her bump. “I’m sorry, look at her tummy! She is HUGE. I know why she’s huge, I saw her sonogram,” joked Joan Rivers as the camera cut to the selfie of Ellen DeGeneres posing with 10 other stars (plus Lupita Nyong’o’s brother). And making things worse, jerky co-host and fashion stylist George Kotsiopoulos chimed in, “That doesn’t look like a baby bump—looks like a beer belly!”

Oh, no they didn’t!  Yes, yes, they did! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! I wanted to yell back some choice expletives at the TV screen. How could they? Being pregnant is such a sacred time, and one when you truly have no control whatsoever over your body. Of course, Elsa’s not the first star to be fat-shamed while pregnant (Kim Kardashian and Jessica Simpson!), but it doesn’t make it anymore acceptable. Yes, the show is supposed to be funny—supposed to be—but this time it crossed the Mean Girl line, in my opinion.

TELL US: Do you think when it comes to comedy everyone’s a fair target? Or should pregnant fat jokes be off limits?

Kim Kardashian Wants HOW MANY Kids With Kanye West?

Friday, January 17th, 2014

It’s no secret that Kim Kardashian and rapper-fiancé Kanye West are in love with 7-month-old daughter North. Since having her, she’s practically all they can talk—or Instagram—about (and who can blame them, she’s a total cutie!). So the big question is: How many kids will Kimye have? Kim recently addressed that on Ellen, explaining that having Baby North has changed that answer for her. “I’ve always wanted about six (like her mom),” said Kim. “After having North, I would have a million!”

Hold up—before Balenciaga starts mass-producing designer onesies for Kim’s humongous clan, she went on to say she’d have a million if pregnancy wasn’t so hard. “I wouldn’t really wish [my pregnancy experience] upon anyone. Anyone,” she said. “It’s all worth it in the end, so I would definitely suffer through that. But pregnancy was not a good experience for me. At all!”

This isn’t the first time Kim has spoken out saying pregnancy isn’t as easy breezy as some moms make it seem. While pregnant, she told Entertainment Tonight, “I wouldn’t say that it’s been easy,” she said. “When people say pregnancy is fun and they love it, I would have to disagree. I think it will become easier, but it’s…a little painful…it’s an adjustment.”

If you believe the rumors, Kim would like to get pregnant—and married—this summer. According to Us Weekly, a source has told them that Kim wants to be expecting by June, and be a pregnant bride.” Kim has already confirmed she and Kanye plan to be married in July. The source adds: “She’s hoping for a girl next, then a boy.” I guess we’ll have to wait to see what she wants the other nine hundred thousand nine hundred and ninety-seven to be! LOL.

The Most Googled Celeb Pregnancy of 2013 Goes to…

Thursday, December 19th, 2013

Not so fast! Before I announce the winner, let’s recap the “nominees” aka all of the lovely pregnant stars of 2013 (well, most of them—there isn’t enough space or time to go over every single one of them but these are the highlights!).

In the newsmakers category we have Kate Middleton, who was the picture of perfection—period. Jessica Simpson was a boho goddess in major maxis. Though Kim Kardashian was often criticized for her fashion (and her pregnancy weight gain), I think she was graceful under pressure (that said, note to pregnant women everywhere: a head-to-toe, long sleeve, high-neck rose-patterned gown is not a good look—ever).

As for our favorite musicians, Shakira’s hips didn’t—and still don’t—lie. Even nine months pregnant, she was just as perky and petite as ever (how’d she do it?). Fergie was able to maintain her rocker edge from start to finale (I wanted an encore!). Gwen Stefani has been the master of (bump) disguise in fashion-forward staples any girl would die for (especially me!).

Then you have the sweet girl-next-door types who’ve melted our hearts with every interview or Twitter post about what it means to be a mom: Drew Barrymore (I am eating up every gushing word she utters!), Jennifer Love Hewitt (I wish your mom was still alive to see your adorable bump!), Kristen Bell (cuteoverload!), and Jenna Dewan-Tatum (who was one of the most stunning pregnant women ever! Am I right?).

And we can’t forget the mamas-to-be who just recently surprised us all with their pregnancy news: Kelly Clarkson (sending morning sickness-ending vibes your way, girl!), Olivia Wilde (the kid’s going to have looks and humor!), Ginnifer Goodwin (yes, I’m a little jealous! First, you had an on and off-screen fairytale romance, now you’re getting your happy ending!) and Kerry Washington (brains, beauty and unbelievable style!).

And the title for most Googled pregnant woman of 2013 goes to…drum roll, please! KIM KARDASHIAN! Now here’s the top 10 list of the most Googled pregnant babes of 2013 in descending order:

1. Kim Kardashian

2. Kate Middleton

3. Megan Fox

4. Shakira

5. Jessica Simpson

6. Halle Berry

7. Tamar Braxton

8. Olivia Wilde

9. Kerry Washington

10. Jennifer Love Hewitt

TELL US: Are you surprised by the list? Did your favorite pregnant stars make the cut? Who was left out that should have been on it?

Do Stilettos & 9 Months Pregnancy Mix?

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

Celebrities and sky-high heels go together like chocolate and peanut butter (yum!). But when you’re in the late stages of pregnancy, should you be wearing the same six-inch pumps you worshipped pre-pregnancy? Stylist to the stars Rachel Zoe certainly does. But even heelaholics like Kim Kardashian, Jessica Simpson and Fergie wore flats on occasion while preggers.

At nine months pregnant, Rachel was recently spotted wearing stiletto over-the-knee boots. This is nothing new for her, of course, with her first pregnancy with son Skyler, she tweeted: “Who said one can’t rock 6 inch high leopard booties by Brian Atwood at 38 weeks pregnant!!”

Yes, she’s looked fabulous with both pregnancies, but isn’t rocking massive heels while so pregnant down-right dangerous? As your belly gets bigger, your center of gravity can get wonky, leaving you less steady and more likely to trip over your own feet, starting at around the 25-week mark.

Most doctors suggest wearing under a 2-inch heel with good arch support once you enter the third trimesters, because of fear of falls as well as the fact that you can make existing back pain and leg cramps even worse when you’re in heels for extended periods of time. The best solution: if you really have to wear high heels, Women’s Health recommends alternating them with flatter ones through out the week, and as silly as it sounds, doing some calf stretches before wearing them, so not to cause cramping.

My feet were completely swollen my entire third trimester, so I couldn’t have squeezed into heels even if I tried (thank God I delivered during flip-flop weather)! But who can blame a fashionista for wanting to look and feel like her fierce pre-pregnancy self? After all, many women may not be able to wear their favorite footwear post-baby. That’s right, I hate to break it to you, but pregnancy can make your feet wider and increase your feet by up to a full shoe size by the time you deliver (mine are definitely wider and a half-size bigger!). So enjoy your favorite heels while you still can, ladies!

TELL US: Will you be wearing your stilettos till the very end of your pregnancy? Or at what point in your pregnancy do you think you should switch to flats and kitten heels?
