Is Kim Kardashian’s Morning Sickness Remedy Safe?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015

Kim Kardashian morning sickness

When Kim Kardashian talks, people listen. Her social media platforms are well-known for their massive followings and ability to influence fans with purchasing power.

That’s why her recent post to her Instagram account—which has nearly 40 million followers (let that sink in)—gave me pause. In it, she’s touting a pregnancy-related drug—and talking about plans to “partner” with the company that makes it. The photo shows the star holds up a medicine bottle of Diclegis, along with a caption that personally endorses its effectiveness on morning sickness.

She wrote, “OMG. Have you heard about this? As you guys know my #morningsickness has been pretty bad. I tried changing things about my lifestyle, like my diet, but nothing helped, so I talked to my doctor. He prescribed me #Diclegis, I felt a lot better and most importantly, it’s been studied and there was no increased risk to the baby. I’m so excited and happy with my results that I’m partnering with Duchesnay USA to raise awareness about treating morning sickness. If you have morning sickness, be safe and sure to ask your doctor about the pill with the pregnant woman on it…”

So far close to a half million people have liked the post. So I was really hoping her recommendation was something at least safe, if not also effective, for all the people who might emulate her. But is there actual science behind it?

As it turns out, yes.

“Diclegis is the only Class A medication [for morning sickness] approved by the FDA in pregnancy,” Jill Maura Rabin, M.D., a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, told Parents.com. “This is a safe medication in pregnancy to be used for women who experience nausea and vomitting.”

She explained that 85 percent of pregnant women experience some form of this discomfort, mainly in the first trimester. (She also clarified that “morning sickness,” as many of us know, is a misnomer—it can certainly extend into other hours of the day.)

Of course, Dr. Rabin stressed the importance of using the drug only as prescribed; it’s not available over the counter. “If your doctor prescribes it, there is a specific way of taking it designed to maximize efficacy,” she says. “The typical perscription is two [pills] at bedtime. Peak action is five to seven hours after you take it, so when you wake up in the morning, hopefully you’ll feel better.”

Dr. Rabin further explained that the medication was suspended for a period of 30 years—a version returned to the U.S. market in 2013 after being approved by the FDA as Diclegis—because a study linked it with problems with shortening of the baby’s limbs. “But when they stopped the medication, the limb shortening occurred at the same rate. It was determined not to be good research, and the FDA came out in favor of [Diclegis].”

It’s True: Kim and Kanye Are Having a Boy!

Monday, June 22nd, 2015

Kim Kardashian is a mama who clearly wants to control her own message—the pregnant reality TV star shot down recent rumors that she and hubby Kanye West are expecting a baby boy by tweeting out to her followers, “Nothing is confirmed unless you hear it from me!”

Well, now we’re hearing it from her! On Father’s Day, Kardashian posted a sweet daddy-daughter pic of Kanye and 2-year-old North on Instagram with the caption, “Precious moments like this when were traveling on tour with you are what I live for. You’re such a good daddy to North & you will be the best daddy to our new son too!”

Talk about sneaking in the news!

We already knew that Kim, who is due sometime in December and apparently is not going to name the new baby South, was having bad morning sickness, and reportedly hired a nutritionist. But she stayed mum up until now on the boy-or-girl news. Now that the world knows,a whole new guessing game of baby boy names can begin. Too bad Reign is already taken!

4 Things We Already Know About Kim Kardashian’s Pregnancy

Wednesday, June 10th, 2015

Kim Kardashian pregnantThe news of Kim Kardashian’s second pregnancy quickly swept through the media, and since then, we’ve gleaned a few additional pieces of information about how she’s progressing—though she’s still in the early stages and barely showing. Here’s what we know so far:

1. She’s having bad morning sickness.

Thanks to her social media candidness, we know the reality star is suffering from debilitating morning sickness. Recent tweets have included comments like “So f–king sick today on all levels!!!!! UGHHHHHHHHH I can’t deal!!!!!!!!!! Praying I get through the day.” She also opted out of a silly holiday last week, tweeting, “Today is National Doughnut Day! Thought I would enjoy it more but morning/all day sickness really ruins things! LOL Maybe its for the best!”

2. She’s reportedly hired a nutritionist.

Kim’s struggles during her first pregnancy, including preeclampsia leading to early delivery, were much publicized. In the hopes of avoiding similar problems this time around, she has reportedly hired a nutritionist. According to TMZ, the star commissioned an expert to create a meal plan that is low in sodium and includes plenty of water.

3. She’s not (necessarily) having a boy.

While reports circulated that Kim already knew the gender of her baby—and that it’s a boy—the star fired back, calling that news baseless. She took to Twitter (a favorite social medium) to respond, writing, “Nothing is confirmed unless you hear it from me!” In addition to the gender reports, she responded to others that suggested an array of erroneous details: “So many rumors…we are not having twins, yes I am carrying my own baby lol & we have not told anyone the sex of our baby yet!”

Of course, the wording there indicates that she does already know if she’s having a baby boy or a baby girl!

4. She’s not toning down her style.

Since Kim announced her pregnancy, she has stepped out in the likes of a latex dress and a see-through feathered getup. This might come as no surprise—except that, after her last pregnancy, she admitted what she really should have done was get into some more traditional maternity clothes.

That said, Kim is barely beginning to show… so there’s still plenty of time for style watching!

Will Everyone Be Nicer to Pregnant Kim Kardashian This Time Around?

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2015

Kim Kardashian Pregnant Baby No. 2I’m pretty happy Kim Kardashian West is pregnant again. Not just because infertility causes deep suffering and she appears to have overcome it. But because it gives us all another chance to behave like civilized humans and not disgraceful Internet trolls.

You’ll remember Kim’s first pregnancy full well: She gained a lot of weight, suffered from preeclampsia, swelled severely, and ultimately delivered early—and through it all she was ruthlessly shamed for her pregnant body.

Headlines screamed about her size and loss of control of her famously sexy body. A Shamu-comparison meme represented the worst about the Internet: winning at cleverness, losing at civility, dangerous in its implications.

Whether you’re a fan or not—and I’ll call myself curious enough to peek at her Instagram when no one is looking, but not enough to actually follow her—body shaming is so not OK. No caveats, no excuses. It’s just not OK, period.

A popular justification for the body shaming, as Vogue.com pointed out after the second-pregnancy news broke, goes something like this: “Well, Kim is famous because she exposes her body, so this is what she gets. She invited it.” But that implies we as a culture weren’t also willing participants in her rise to prominence on account of her assets. We made it happen, but then we turned on her as soon as she became pregnant. What kind of message is that?

As a new mom to twins—babies I carried to full term, whose combined birth weight was more than 12 pounds—I’m acutely aware of the pregnant-and-body-shamed phenomenon. I remember quite well how people used to see my formidable baby bump and ditch their manners. They figured it was okay to point and gawk and make totally unfiltered remarks they never would have made to the face of any other woman.

Of course, Kim’s an easy target for such remarks on a massive scale. But let’s hope, this time around, we can manage to be civil—if not actually kind—in our discussions of a woman creating the miracle of life.

Kim Kardashian West Is Pregnant Again!

Monday, June 1st, 2015

So much for surrogacy…Kim Kardashian West is pregnant!

While recent updates on the reality TV star’s struggle to give North West a sibling revealed IVF issues and the possibility of using a surrogate, the latest news says that’s not the case. On last night’s episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim was shown telling sister Khloe, “I just got the blood test back, and I am pregnant!” E! News even sent a “congrats!” tweet.

Kim also appears on the cover of the July issue of Glamour magazine, and confirmed to the magazine two weeks after her interview, as the issue was going to press, that she and husband Kanye West are indeed expecting again, saying “We are so beyond excited.”

Despite her fertility issues, Kim never seemed to give up her dream of becoming pregnant again, telling Matt Lauer in a Today show interview, “I still have hope, so I’m just going to keep on trying.”

She was equally honest and open in her interview with Glamour, telling the magazine,

“I didn’t know that I was going to be so open with [my fertility challenges]. But meeting people at my fertility doctor’s office who are going through the same things I’m going through, I thought, Why not share my story? It’s been really emotional. One doctor told me I would need my uterus removed after I had another baby—I could only have one more. One was like, “You should get a surrogate.” The other one was like, “Oh, no, you’ll be fine.” Then I called my doctor, and he’s like, “You know what? I believe—we’ll get through it.”There are definitely times when I walked out [of the doctor's office] hysterically crying, and other times when I was like, “OK, everything’s looking good—it’s going to be this month!” The waiting and waiting has been a roller coaster.”

No word yet on the due date, gender, or any other details—but we’re sure more information will be revealed (or teased) in future episodes of KUWTK. Congrats to the couple!
