Girl! The Client List star and costar hubby (yes, they had a secret wedding!) Brian Hallisay welcomed daughter Autumn James Hallisay on Tuesday, November 26. The fact that the couple had a girl was as much of a surprise to them as it is for us! The pair decided they didn’t want to find out the baby’s sex in advance. Instead, they’d just wait till they met him or her.
At a Pampers event in New York City in August, the ex-Party of Five star revealed why she was willing to wait to find out what she was having: “It’s one of life’s greatest surprises and we wanted to keep it that way,” she said. Two months later, she had a gender-neutral yellow and black baby shower surrounded by friends and family.
Though her pregnancy wasn’t always easy, Jennifer told E! News that she fully embraced every minute of it—including the bad parts. “Your body goes through a lot of changes. You feel a lot of things hormonally,” she said. “There are surges, there are aches, there are pains, there’s swelling—there’s all of that stuff. But it’s all really beautiful because it’s for a purpose.”
Yes, indeed, it’s important to see the “beauty” in everything while you’re pregnant. Otherwise, at times, it might be too much to bear! So take a note from Jennifer’s pregnancy playbook and relax and enjoy the ride!

Who doesn’t love a baby shower? Girl talk, cute gifts, tasty bites, fun games, and you are—or someone you love is—about to have a cutie patootie! Jennifer Love Hewitt’s friends and family feted her with a super-chic baby shower this weekend at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles. Since she and her fiancé (also one of her co-stars on The Client List), Brian Hallisay, want to be surprised by the baby’s sex, and will be waiting till the birth to find out whether they’re the proud parents of a boy or girl, it was a gender-neutral shower.
Celebrity party planner to the stars, Mindy Weiss, designed the buzz-worthy color scheme of black, yellow and white, and JLH—who is due in December—was positively glowing in a matching yellow strapless maxi. Here are three important lessons you can steal from her big day for your or a friend’s shower.
• Make your décor do double duty. Jennifer’s shower had a cute clothesline of onesies as part of the shower’s décor (The shower for Glee’s Heather Morris did something similar with a onesie decorating station, where the finished products were hung on a clothesline). You could also fill up baby bottles with various candies at a candy bar that the mom can use once the baby is born. That way you’re not spending money on pricy decorative items that will just go in the trash after the party.
• You don’t have to have chi-chi h’ors deuvres to impress the guests—everyone loves comfort food. Jennifer’s shower served the mama-to-be’s favorite bites like bruschetta, mini pizzas, and custom baby-faced cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes (Jennifer recently admitted cupcakes have been her biggest craving!).
• Favors should have a personal touch. Jennifer’s guests created their own fragrance at a scent bar (what a fun idea, right?), then on their way out they were given chocolate chip cookies in black-and-white striped bags (to match the color theme) with bottles of milk. What a sweet prezzie—literally!

Would you say “I do” when you’re “eating for two”? Not only did Teen Mom 2 star, Kailyn Lowry, do just that, but she was eight-months-pregnant as she walked down the aisle in a bump-hugging wedding gown—praying she wouldn’t go into labor early.
For some pregnant women, it’s important to be married before having the baby, even if that means being a bumpalicious bride. Getting married while pregnant can be extremely romantic. Taking your vows while feeling your little bundle of joy inside you? It doesn’t get much better than that, especially with all of the feel-good oxytocin rushing through your body while you’re pregnant. It makes you extra-passionate so you feel truly, madly, deeply in love. And the silver lining of having a sober wedding? You’ll be sure to remember every last detail of your magical night!
But lots of other moms-to-be, like Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jessica Simpson, have chosen to wait to tie the knot until after becoming a mom. Let’s face it, for most the biggest reason to wait is vanity. Who doesn’t want to look ah-mazing on her wedding day? For many that means getting back down to her pre-baby body, and not having any limitations when it comes to finding a dream gown (maternity dresses can be beautiful too, but there aren’t as many to choose from).
If you wait till after the baby comes, then he or she can be part of your big day and be in the photos with you—memories that will last a lifetime. But waiting also means planning a wedding could be super-difficult with a newborn in tow—no sleep, feedings every few hours, you barely have time to take a shower, let alone plan one of the most important days of your life. There’s no right answer for everyone. You have to decide what’s most important to you, and how you envision your wedding day, then go for it—without getting cold feet!

Jennifer Love Hewitt told People magazine that she’s delaying wedding plans until after she gives birth and loses the baby weight. Putting “carriage before marriage” seems to be a new trend, especially in Hollywood. Jessica Simpson and fiancé Eric Johnson still haven’t said “I do” and they now have two kids—Max, 15 months, and Ace, nearly 2 months old. Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have been engaged for four years, now have 5-month-old daughter Lincoln, and still haven’t tied the knot. Kristin Cavallari wed Jay Cutler 10 months after baby Camden was born.
But celebrities aren’t the only ones who are choosing to have babies without a marriage certificate. As of 2012, more than half of the babies born to American women under 30 are born out of wedlock. Is marriage a thing of generations past?
Lots of couples —young and old—now think, Why do you need the piece of paper to have a commitment? And with marriage failure rates being so high anyway, many feel that living together and having a family only gets more complicated—and more expensive—if you get married and end up splitting.
I think it’s a very personal choice, and don’t think having kids without being married should be looked down upon like it once was (though I was admittedly married before getting pregnant myself). I was surprised to read that there do seem to be downsides to these new, modern families. According to the New York Times, “researchers have consistently found that children born outside of marriage face elevated risks of falling into poverty, failing in school or suffering emotional and behavioral problems.”
So are married couples who have kids more committed to their families? Do the kids feel more secure and stable knowing that mom and dad are married? This reminds me of another celebrity pair: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who have been together over eight years and have always said that marriage wasn’t a priority for them. That is, until their kids started asking why they weren’t married, and encouraging them to wed. So it will be interesting to see If they ever do walk down that aisle, and it will be interesting for me to hear if you think you should be married before you bring kids into this world.
TELL US: Do you think it matters if family comes first—literally—before marriage?

Put down that bag of chips and step away from those cookies! Being pregnant means having constant food cravings that we can’t control. Some women need sweets (I sent my husband on plenty of ice cream and donut runs). Others hunger for spicy (I ate Mexican and Indian food all the time!) or tart (I suddenly wanted salt and vinegar potato chips after never eating them before in my life).
But no matter what your craving(s), all pregnant women like to feed into the old saying, “I’m eating for two”. But the truth is, if you’re a healthy weight you are only supposed to have an extra 300 calories a day while pregnant (or the equivalent of a turkey sandwich). While I fully believe hormones are the little devils on our shoulders who make us gorge ourselves on goodies, most of us use the excuse of being pregnant to indulge in every last culinary whim (guilty as charged!). Jennifer Love Hewitt is no different. She recently confessed that being knocked up has amplified her already large sweet tooth. So instead of savoring one delicious cupcake, she chows down on three at a time!
I’m sure that sounds like total bliss to you right about now! Not to steal the cherry off of your sundae, but new research out of the University of Alberta reveals that excessive weight gain during the first half of pregnancy means bigger, fatter, longer babies with more body fat. The simple translation: Ouch! Those babies are going to be a lot harder to get out, and can lead to lengthier labors and more medical interventions, like c-sections.
No one wants the food police knocking down their door, and this is not intended to make you feel guilty about any past or future snacking indiscretions (we’re all human!), but it is food for thought. What would you rather have: a mound of delicious homemade chocolate-chip cookies or a quicker, easier birth with less pain and less complications? For me the answer is a piece of cake (not literally!).
