Stars—they’re just like us! And that means that when there’s a baby on the way, they celebrate in a big way. Recently, Chelsea Clinton, Savannah Guthrie, Snooki, and Jwoww shared the details of their baby showers—how do they compare to your celebration?
They picked elaborate themes. Snooki’s shower featured a grand “Great Gatsby” theme, and she (and several other guests) sported fascinators and flapper-esque ensembles to fit with the party.
They invited the guys. Former President Bill Clinton and Chelsea’s husband Mark Mezvinsky both made appearances at Chelsea Clinton’s celebration.
They hired entertainment. Jwoww’s shower featured a drag queen emcee to keep the crowd entertained.
The gift opening happened elsewhere.Chelsea Clinton’s shower featured lots of celebrating, but the mom-to-be took home her bounty and opened the onesies and strollers in the privacy of her home.
They turned a “sprinkle” into a full-on fete. In the past, moms-to-be usually saved lavish showers for their first-born, with very small (or no) celebrations for future children. But perhaps Snooki’s part of a trend to celebrate every baby’s arrival. (And really, doesn’t every baby deserve a party?)
They planned a menu perfect for the mom-to-be. Chelsea Clinton’s gluten-free menu meant she could enjoy any of the goodies offered at the celebration.
They asked their guests to provide gifts for those who really need them. At Savannah Guthrie’s totally cute shower guests were asked to bring one book for her baby, and one to be donated for those who may have a harder time stocking their bookshelves. Because let’s face facts: Savannah can probably swing a pretty nice stroller.

Hi! I’m Alesandra (but you can call me Alice). I’m excited that today I’ll be taking over the helm at Parents.com’s Everything Pregnancy blog. Thanks for welcoming me on board!
I’ll be posting here about once a day on topics ranging from celebrity baby announcements to pregnancy news and trends. And I’ll be trying to deliver my honest opinions, even if they’re controversial—so I’d love to engage with you in the posts’ comments section and on social media to hear your thoughts as well. Here’s to friendly open dialogue!
I’m especially thrilled to be taking over this space at a pretty special time in my life: I’m 32 weeks pregnant and expecting boy-girl twins! So if you come here to read the blog day after day because pregnancy topics are close to your own heart—maybe you’re pregnant now, or recently been there and done that—know I’m writing from a place of equal enthusiasm. I’m so glad we’re in this together.
Here’s a little more about me: I’m a writer, editor, reporter, and blogger based in Los Angeles. I’ve written about all sorts of lifestyle topics like pregnancy and parenting, home and garden, fashion and beauty, food, travel, and entertainment for sites like Today.com, E! Online, iVillage, Country Living, BuzzFeed, PureWow, and more. I have a B.A. from U.C. Berkeley and a master’s in journalism from N.Y.U.
I’m also a very lucky wife to a truly amazing guy, who’s already killing it in the role of super dad as we get prepared around here. Hubby’s a business owner by day and a hobbiest DJ and barbecue grill master on the side. My most favorite things to do are international travel (and yes, I’m very interested to see how that lifestyle evolves after the babies come!), hiking, scuba diving and snorkeling, vegetarian cooking and dining (I’m celebrating 21 years meat free this summer), and renovating our 1936 Spanish-style house in L.A. Oh no, she didn’t! Yes, she did! Australian blogger Loni Jane Anthony, who made news for going on an extreme diet that consisted almost exclusively of fruit, has opened her big mouth again, and this time she’s managed to insult pregnant women everywhere! After she displayed what many critics considered to be an eating disorder while pregnant, often called pregorexia, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, weighing in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces (thank God!). So, of course, outspoken Loni is now saying she is “living proof you don’t have to become a whale while you’re pregnant.” Exqueeze me!
I think I speak for any woman who has ever been pregnant when I say, “How dare you?” When you’re pregnant you are no longer in control of the shape of your body. Yes, it’s smart to watch what you eat when you’re pregnant, and too much overindulgence in those out-of-control pregnancy cravings can be bad news (leading to bigger, heavier babies, which equals a harder labor for you, and possible obesity in your kid’s future). But enough of the fat shaming! It’s bad enough when it comes from the media. I don’t think women should be doing it to each other!
I also don’t think most women want to hear the criticism from Loni, whose radical fruit diet sounds a little nuts. She admitted to eating mostly bananas (up to 20 a day!), drinking fruit smoothies and occasionally pairing it with a salad for dinner. Mom to new son Rowdy, Loni says, “You don’t have to put on heaps of weight and never bounce back—you can stay really healthy.” She gained about 37 pounds while pregnant, and says she lost 22 pounds within days of giving birth. Loni says her son is the picture of health—”feeding like a machine,” “sleeping,” and “happy.” She also says she’s making plenty of breast milk, so that her diet is completely fine.
While I completely believe you can be a healthy vegetarian or vegan with a bun in the oven, I still wouldn’t advise any other mom-to-be to follow Loni’s lead with her extreme dieting. The Mayo Clinic says the diet of a pregnant woman should consist of nutrients like folic acid, calcium, vitamin D, protein, and iron, which can be obtained through the consumption of foods such as spinach, beans, milk, yogurt, salmon, eggs, lentils, and poultry. It is suggested that pregnant women have a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
Since Loni’s diet is short in protein—which helps with growth and repair of tissues—and several essential vitamins and minerals, including iron, calcium, and zinc, it can lead to the baby taking calcium from her bones and leaving Loni susceptible to osteoporosis later in life.
According to the New York Daily News, Loni says, “I’m consuming more good fats because I’m breastfeeding, but other than that, I’m eating the same.” And she plans to raise son Rowdy with the same diet. “I’m thriving on a plant-based diet, so why wouldn’t (my baby)? If I believe that the way I eat is the best way possible, then why would I let him eat any other way?”

My name is Patty Adams Martinez, and I’m excited to introduce you to the new blog, Everything Pregnancy, for Parents.com. As a mom of one adorable 9-month-old, what it feels like to be pregnant and the many ups (finding out the sex of the baby! feeling him kick for the first time!) and downs (morning sickness for 6 months straight! developing gestational diabetes!) are fresh in my mind.
Being pregnant is such a magical time, and I’m happy that I’ll be a part of your journey, filling you in on everything from which celebrities are pregnant along with you, to how to dress your ever-growing bump, entertain alcohol-free, plan a babymoon on a budget, and decode all of the important (and sometimes crazy) studies that come out about pregnancy.
I’m an entertainment junkie, who has had the pleasure of interviewing tons of stars over the years, so this pop culture-filled blog about pregnancy is the perfect pairing of my two passions. I’ll be blogging most weekdays with my postings going up around 1 pm ET (if I’m late—please cut me some slack due to my aforementioned cutie, who is currently crawling up a storm and getting into everything in sight).
Much like checking in with your BFF to get caught up on the latest in her life, my hope is that this blog will become a regular destination for mamas-in-the-making to find out the must-know pregnancy news of the moment. I want to hear your feedback too, so please keep me posted when I do something you like, or when I miss the mark.
