One celeb mama is inviting every last one of us to be a part of her baby shower. But she doesn’t feel a bit bashful about the etiquette implications of asking so many people to buy gifts, nor about having a shower for a second baby.
That’s because we’re not talking about ordinary cupcakes and games—but something way, way more important.
Shakira, who is now expecting her second son with soccer star boyfriend Gerard Pique, is inviting everyone to share in the couple’s good news by buying a gift from her registry for impoverished moms and kids all around the world through her World Baby Shower project with Unicef.
Through the campaign, anyone can go online to buy a measles vaccine for $12, or a basic family water kit for $181.30, or another essential in a range of prices from Shakira’s registry. (The couple did a version of the awesome World Baby Shower concept back in 2012, too, when they were getting ready to welcome their first son.)
The star shared details of the latest shower on her Facebook page—where she has close to 107 million fans, so imagine the impact all those folks can make, thanks to her inspiration.
“We wanted to give something to other parents and babies around the world, who live in conditions of extreme poverty and vulnerability but whose lives can be improved greatly by small contributions from others,” she wrote in the post.
And she encouraged other expecting moms of means to get on board with a similar shower approach. “Let’s make the arrival of our new babies be a blessing to us, our families, and to many others as well,” she wrote. “Thanks for your support—we can’t wait to hear about your baby showers and to celebrate together.”
Now there’s a celebrity who knows that good fortune is worth sharing—especially when it comes to the community of moms and babies all around the globe. Hello, role-model mama!

I feel enormously lucky and grateful to have had three baby showers earlier this year when I was expecting my twins. One was a traditional luncheon at my mother-in-law’s warm and inviting home, and one was a sweet work-day event at my husband’s company thrown by his exceptionally gracious and creative colleagues.
But it’s the third shower that was the most me, you might say: It had a ’90s hip-hop theme. Here’s why…
Not long after I started dating my husband—another very devoted fan of throwback hip-hop, and a former DJ with a huge music collection in the genre—we went with a group of friends on a camping trip to Big Sur. After a few drinks around the campfire, we ended up doing a full-on, fired-up a capella duet to LL Cool J’s “Around the Way Girl.” That’s the moment my friends said they knew we were made for each other.
At our wedding a couple of years later, my maid-of-honor sister and bestie bridesmaid blew the roof off the place (OK, it was outdoors, but…) when in lieu of a traditional toast, they performed a rap they’d written, riffing off the lyrics and tune to MC Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock’s “It Takes Two.” It was perfection.
So four years later, when we were expecting two babies, the “It Takes Two” theme worked equally well as an anthem, and the wedding party crew got back to work as hostesses behind a ’90s hip-hop baby shower that totally killed.
Among the details were a cake decked with personalized mix tapes my sister had drawn; cookies in the shapes of rappers like Biggie and Tupac; plush animals as tabletop centerpieces clad in Adidas track suits; and the super fun onesies you see pictured here.
It was so special to have such a personal shower thrown by observant, open-minded loved ones — and to have one without having to strong arm my hosts into my unique theme.
But if your hosts aren’t quite as observant, here’s one trick for getting a message across without coming off as rude or ungrateful: Make a public Pinterest board and collect your “dream baby shower” ideas there!
And hey, if it includes a few options for vagina cakes—I sure won’t judge!

Stars—they’re just like us! And that means that when there’s a baby on the way, they celebrate in a big way. Recently, Chelsea Clinton, Savannah Guthrie, Snooki, and Jwoww shared the details of their baby showers—how do they compare to your celebration?
They picked elaborate themes. Snooki’s shower featured a grand “Great Gatsby” theme, and she (and several other guests) sported fascinators and flapper-esque ensembles to fit with the party.
They invited the guys. Former President Bill Clinton and Chelsea’s husband Mark Mezvinsky both made appearances at Chelsea Clinton’s celebration.
They hired entertainment. Jwoww’s shower featured a drag queen emcee to keep the crowd entertained.
The gift opening happened elsewhere.Chelsea Clinton’s shower featured lots of celebrating, but the mom-to-be took home her bounty and opened the onesies and strollers in the privacy of her home.
They turned a “sprinkle” into a full-on fete. In the past, moms-to-be usually saved lavish showers for their first-born, with very small (or no) celebrations for future children. But perhaps Snooki’s part of a trend to celebrate every baby’s arrival. (And really, doesn’t every baby deserve a party?)
They planned a menu perfect for the mom-to-be. Chelsea Clinton’s gluten-free menu meant she could enjoy any of the goodies offered at the celebration.
They asked their guests to provide gifts for those who really need them. At Savannah Guthrie’s totally cute shower guests were asked to bring one book for her baby, and one to be donated for those who may have a harder time stocking their bookshelves. Because let’s face facts: Savannah can probably swing a pretty nice stroller.

I thought my baby shower pushed the envelope, because I had cookies in the shapes of dead rappers like Biggie and Tupac, and a cake decked with personalized mix tapes. (All in service of my twin shower’s ’90s hip-hop “It Takes Two” theme! Get it?!)
But Christina Aguilera took the baby shower envelope pushing a few steps farther—emphasis on the “pushing.”
At a co-ed shower for about 50 guests, the star reportedly had a cake decorated with the image of a woman giving birth on a rug, explicitly showing the baby’s head emerging from you-know-where. According to reports, the writing said, “Push Xtina, push!”
Can you think of anything more appetizing than that?!
Well, this is one baby shower trend not isolated to celebs like Christina—though I kind of wish it were. No, indeed, plenty of examples of the graphic cake theme are illustrated all over the Internet. Trust me. Just search for the hashtag (sorry) #vaginacake or check out Pinterest.

Honestly? If I see pubic hair—or even its sugar representation—on my dessert plate, I’m sending it back. But in general, I am all for thinking outside the (ahem) box when it comes to mixing up staid, traditional events like baby showers.
I’d love to hear from you on the explicit baby shower cake trend: Good fun, or gross?

Kelly Clarkson has finally confirmed what we’ve all been waiting for via Twitter: “I’m pregnant!!! Brandon and I are so excited! Best early Christmas present ever.” A big congrats to my all-time favorite American Idol!
Believe it or not: Kelly says she never wanted to be a mom. But all that changed when she met the love of her life, Brandon Blackstock (who has two kids from a previous relationship). While everyone presumed Kelly’s recent slim down was to look good in her wedding pictures, Kelly told Taste of Country it was actually baby-making prep. “It’s all about making my body the most healthy inside out. And I’m reading all these books,” she said.
Ever since she and Brandon got married a month ago in Tennessee, having a baby is pretty much all the singer has talked about! “I want babies!” the newlywed declared in a radio interview on Oct. 30. ”Everybody keeps saying, ‘What do you want for Christmas?’ And I’m like, ‘I want to be pregnant.’”
She continued the baby talk on Jay Leno on Nov. 11. Though Jay pressed her on whether she was pregnant, Kelly wasn’t ready to make her big announcement—only telling the talk show host, “[We want a baby] like now! Practice makes perfect! We’re trying, trying, trying. I never wanted kids before, but now I want, like, five.”
I’m so happy for Kelly, and I love that she told her devoted fans first! She is the most down-to-earth celebrity, and is going to be the cutest pregnant woman ever. You know she’s going to have one rockin’ baby shower too! I can’t wait for more details!
TELL US: How long after getting into a relationship did you wait to have kids?
NEXT: Follow along as Kelly’s baby bump grows!
