Christina Aguilera’s Baby Shower Cake: Worst Trend Ever?!

Tuesday, July 15th, 2014

I thought my baby shower pushed the envelope, because I had cookies in the shapes of dead rappers like Biggie and Tupac, and a cake decked with personalized mix tapes. (All in service of my twin shower’s ’90s hip-hop “It Takes Two” theme! Get it?!)

But Christina Aguilera took the baby shower envelope pushing a few steps farther—emphasis on the “pushing.”

At a co-ed shower for about 50 guests, the star reportedly had a cake decorated with the image of a woman giving birth on a rug, explicitly showing the baby’s head emerging from you-know-where. According to reports, the writing said, “Push Xtina, push!”

Can you think of anything more appetizing than that?!

Well, this is one baby shower trend not isolated to celebs like Christina—though I kind of wish it were. No, indeed, plenty of examples of the graphic cake theme are illustrated all over the Internet. Trust me. Just search for the hashtag (sorry) #vaginacake or check out Pinterest.

Honestly? If I see pubic hair—or even its sugar representation—on my dessert plate, I’m sending it back. But in general, I am all for thinking outside the (ahem) box when it comes to mixing up staid, traditional events like baby showers.

I’d love to hear from you on the explicit baby shower cake trend: Good fun, or gross?

Star Wars Baby Shower: May the Force Be With Jaime King!

Monday, August 19th, 2013

Baby Shower CakeMay the force be with Hart of Dixie star Jaime King when she goes into labor this fall! The pregnant actress and George Lucas fanatic, was feted by friends (including super-stylish celeb pals Jessica Alba, Rachel Bilson and Selma Blair) at her Star Wars-themed baby shower on Saturday at the Soho House in West Hollywood.

The centerpiece of the baby shower was an elaborate cake featuring Jaime as Princess Leah, and her husband Kyle in full Jedi gear, surrounded by Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, and their baby on a planet (most likely in a galaxy far, far away). Since the couple doesn’t know the sex of their baby—and plan to be surprised on his or her birthday—the cake read: “May the force be with baby Newman.”

Why the Sci-fi theme? The space adventure holds a special place in Jaime and her husband’s hearts. Aside from both of them being obsessed with all things Star Wars, Kyle directed Jaime in the 2009 movie Fanboys—about buddies who take a cross-country trip to Skywalker Ranch so their dying friend can see a screening of Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace before its released—and Jaime voiced several characters on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated TV series from 2009 to 2012.

While I’m not as R2D2- and C3P0-obsessed as Jaime and Kyle, I love that they (and her friends throwing the shower) went outside the box with the baby shower theme. It’s a tip for everyone to learn from. Your (or your friend’s shower) should focus on the mom-to-be’s likes and interests and really be personal to her. Love books? A nursery rhyme, Alice in Wonderland, or Dr. Seuss-themed party is perfect. Can’t get enough of animals? A circus, jungle or petting zoo-themed shower could be for you. Have a special interest, like football, music or even knitting? They can all be incorporated into a baby shower tailored just for you, making your day extra-special.
