Here are a few more outtakes from the craft development we did for FamilyFun‘s Messy Backyard Art feature. Aren’t the swirly colors gorgeous? We had so much fun playing with this project. Did I mention that my children labeled me “best mom in the world” after they were knee deep in messy projects for the month of May? They did and I didn’t argue.
This one was particularly messy and especially fun! It involved a giant ice block on a hot summer day, so it was also refreshing.
Today, it rains and rains. Maybe some indoor process-based art?

As a contributor to FamilyFun magazine, part of my job is bringing super fun projects home for my children to try out. I’m a lucky duck (and, so are my kids!). Right now, I’m working on a Messy Backyard Art feature where the gooey, gloppy, sticky, runny stuff rules. Needless to say, my children are thrilled.
These are some photographs from yesterday’s project: dribbly paint art with bright colors and lots of mess! Perfect for a summery hot afternoon. Oh, and YES!, my two wore their pajamas.

If your kid is craving creativity, but your feeling uninspired, don’t underestimate the power of experimentation. Get out some paper plates. Pour a few circles of different colored acrylic paints and encourage kids to mix, blend, stir, and swirl. Don’t forget to include white because it offers a fabulous way to subtly change colors.
Not only will your little artist have fun, she will also learn so much about the building blocks of color.
In the end, they might even discover their favorite shade of blue.

1. Visit Heather at a happy wanderer for simple and interesting ways to explore with marbles. It struck me as a nice rainy day activity.
2. These cork key chain people are incredibly adorable! Wouldn’t they make great Mother’s Day gifts! via The Crafty Crow
3. These naturally dyed beads use a similar process as naturally dyed Easter eggs. The result is subtle and beautiful, and you can use them again and again for weeks and months to come.
4. Ohhh! Walnut Mice! I have a thing for using nutshells to make things, and these are too cute.
5. Now that it is spring, it is a lovely time to make a fleet of origami boats. After you launch them in a big puddle or small pond, you can have boat races. Just stay long enough to catch them on the other side.
