Now that it is summer and we find ourselves celebrating outdoors, I am reminded of how much I love to make party garlands. When we break out the shade structure, I love to decorate it with a colorful, paper pendant garland. It makes the yard look happy and inviting.
The best part about this project is that most of it is actually kid made. I enlist my two and ask them to paint bright colors onto brown paper bags. Then, we cut out triangles and I slowly sew them using a straight stitch on my machine. You can also punch holes and thread with yarn or string.
Hang it wherever the party is!
Happy July weekending, my friends.

Here in New England, we’re still kind of in the thick of it — another blanket of snow will come this evening and the mornings are still deeply cold. But, spring is surely on its way and I like to hang a cheery bird and sun garland in my kitchen to remind myself of the light and tweets that will soon fill our days.
1. Put out a tarp and have children paint the inside of brown paper bags.
2. Set it outside in the sun to dry. (Or inside by the heater)
3. Cut the painted bag into bird and sun shapes.
4. Use a sewing machine (or yarn and a hole punch) to string the birds and suns into a garland.
5. Hang and smile.
