You can say a lot about Kanye West — that he never ever smiles, that his love of leather pants is almost illegal, that he’s a genius at avoiding E! cameras. But one adjective never hurled in his direction is “cheap.” The man deals in the currency of lavish. No gesture is too over the top, especially when it comes to his family. See: his proposal at a rented-out baseball stadium, a vase wall of flowers for wife Kim, diamond starter earrings for baby North. Why would we expect him to show restraint around the holidays?
An in-the-know source told Heat magazine that the rapper has splurged on his favorite baby this Christmas. If the reports are true, then Nori is in for a stellar day. Among the loot is a tot-sized replica of Yeezy’s black SUV and—wait for it—a diamond-encrusted tiara so that she “when she plays dress-up, she can be a real princess,” the source says. (That’s not exactly how it works, but whatever floats your boat, Kanye.) Those two gifts alone supposedly set the artist back a cool $74,000, the Daily Mail reports, a figure that made me feel slightly dizzy but mostly relieved about my own kid’s holiday haul.
Full disclosure: I didn’t buy him a holiday gift until he was nearly 2. I wasn’t being stingy — I just wanted to avoid the present trap, where everyone becomes more focused about what’s under the tree or what comes after the menorah lighting than on the true spirit of the season. Though my husband and I gave him a few treats last year, this year is the first where he’s expecting and anticipating gifts. Like a lot of parents we know, we’re trying our best to keep the excess in check by only buying him a handful of presents he really wants. We’re also beginning to emphasize the idea of giving to others, both through our conversations about the holidays and by picking out toys together for children in need.
Which all sounds great in theory, but honestly, controlling the glut of holiday gifts can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. After all, our son is an only child in a home that celebrates both Christmas and Hanukkah, and is the only grandchild on my side. We also have a circle of generous friends who give him goodies, too. Translation: Much of his December is spent tearing open something shiny and awesome.
My guess is that I’m not alone in wondering how much is too much. Even Kimye seem to be feeling that one out. Kim recently said her daughter will have to work for what she wants; meanwhile, Kanye (allegedly) dropped five figures on gifts for the 18-month-old. As a mom who’s also trying to balance celebrating and spoiling, I take some strange comfort in the fact that even celeb parents are figuring out where to draw the line.
Now it’s your turn: What are your gift-giving plans this holiday?

Two Hollywood mamas showed some flesh recently but with very different results. Last week, Kim Kardashian famously tried to break the Internet by showing off her naked booty (and everything else) for PAPER magazine. A couple of weeks before that, Alyssa Milano posted a couple of pictures of daughter Elizabella breastfeeding that showed—gasp!—part of her breast. While the sight of Mrs. West’s oiled-up backside was considered OK, Milano was criticized for daring to show her daughter mid-suckle.
The former Mistresses star struck back with a tweet that fired up nursing moms everywhere. She wrote: “Wait! I don’t get it. No disrespect to Kim but… people are offended by my breastfeeding selfies & are fine with her (amazing) booty cover?”
It’s a fair question and one that’s inspired women to flood Milano’s Twitter feed with their own breastfeeding photos, hashtags, and shows of support. A sample of a few: “Respect to anyone who chooses to breastfeed and post photos. This one is for you @Alyssa_Milano,” wrote Mrs Mildinhall. ”#Support @Alyssa_Milano let’s #BreakTheInternet and make breastfeeding as natural as it should be! #breastfeeding” tweeted Kathryn Correa. “@Alyssa_Milano Your pic is beautiful. It’s what theyre made for anyway! #NormalizeBreastfeeding #BreastfeedingSelfie,” said Samantha Richards.
Did Milano intend to become the latest celeb to take up the cause of breastfeeding? Who knows, but I think it’s remarkable that she’s using her status to raise awareness that nursing isn’t just natural, it’s also something moms shouldn’t feel ashamed about doing in public. Just as gratifying is how many women have already publicly expressed their support for her (some want to try to break the Internet with their breastfeeding selfies!). We have a long way to go before a mom can nurse in public without getting a side-eye, of course — even women’s clothing stores still have an issue with it — but the more it’s out there on social media, in stores or at restaurants, the more “normal” it becomes.
Tell us: Do you nurse in public? Would you try it? Why or why not?

Kim Kardashian‘s fashion choices are once again making headlines, but this time, it’s not her bare-chested outfits that are raising eyebrows. Instead, rumors are swirling that the famous mom has enlisted the help of a stylist to perfectly coordinate daughter North West’s outfits with her own. “Kim has hired North West her own personal tailor whose sole job is to make mini versions of Kim’s designer outfits and ensure that they always coordinate,” an unnamed source told Grazia magazine, adding that “her wardrobe is planned well in advance with regular meetings to discuss looks for the family’s public appearances, and North has versions to match a lot of what Kim wears, from dresses to handbags and shoes.”
As much as I adore a juicy story about celebrity excess, I know there’s no way this one has any legs. (And sure enough, Kim’s publicist has recently said the rumors are “absolutely false.”) Nori was a chic mini-me (and a really good sport) during all of Paris Fashion Week, even going so far as to wear a sheer skirt like mom’s to the Givenchy collection (see photo on the right). But as any mom can tell you, there will be days when you walk out of the house and suddenly realize you and baby are dressed in exactly the same outfit.
This has happened to me more times than I care to admit. I used to joke that either I dress like a two-year-old boy or my son dresses like a thirtysomething-year-old woman. Neither, of course, is true. It’s just that I, like most moms, have taken over clothes-buying duties for the family. So if I’m feeling stripes and blues one season for my own wardrobe, chances are I’m gravitating to the same things when I hit the kid’s clothing racks. And before long, like it or not, my son and I are as coordinated as the Doublemint Twins. So while I doubt Kim parses through the selection at Crewcuts or Baby Gap like I do, I’m fairly certain she chooses North’s clothes based on her own tastes and dresses her accordingly. Even if that means lots of leather.
Tell us: Have you ever accidentally dressed baby in the same outfit as you?

Is my kid spoiled?
That was the thought running through my mind the other day. We had just left Walgreens, where he sweet-talked me into buying him a set of washable paints, a sheet of stickers, and yet another toy car. A few days earlier, my mother gifted him with a bag full of goodies before she flew back home, and before all of that, we spent a weekend hitting up every kid-friendly attraction in Boston (and trust me, there are A LOT of them). Even though my husband and I swore early on that our only child wouldn’t be swimming in stuff, here we are, three years later, with drawers chock-full of drugstore cars.
I was feeling pretty bad about my parenting skills until I read about how some children of Hollywood elite are living large, and suddenly, my kiddo’s $3 Corvette didn’t seem so bad. First up is North West, who gets my vote as the ultimate Material Girl. There was the designer dress she wore to her parents’ lavish wedding, then the enormous diamond studs she sported on her first birthday. Now, the celebutot has moved onto handbags — you know, for all the pacis and toys she’s no doubt carrying around with her. But forget Coach — for North, only the best will do, and in this case, that means Yves Saint Laurent. The 14-month-old was photographed on mom’s hip wearing a studded YSL purse that costs as much as a mortgage payment.
But Kimye’s kid isn’t the only rich baby flaunting her wealth. Kevin Jonas’ daughter, Alena, is also clearly rolling in the dough. Uncle Joe recently posted a picture of the 7-month-old waving a $100 bill in the air, E! Online reports. The caption? ”My niece Alena has expensive taste.” The proud uncle also created a video of it and set the whole thing to Jay Z’s “100$ Bill.” Judging by the huge smile on Alena’s face, this is probably not the first time she’s made it rain, and I have a feeling it won’t be the last.
Tell us: Do you think you spoil your baby?

While most dads opened up homemade cards and neckties over the weekend, a few celeb fathers enjoyed a little something extra on their big day.
Nearly a month after giving birth to son Future, singer Ciara (finally!) shared a picture of her adorable boy. He was dressed to the nines for his debut, wearing a personalized jersey with black leather pants and matching lace-up booties. (And I thought wrangling my son into a pair of cotton pants was rough!) The big reveal was all part of a Father’s Day shout-out to fiance Future, for whom the “Body Party” singer wrote, “Hey Dad aka Big @Future. Baby Future Loves You. #HappyFathersDay.”
Not to be outdone, Kimye and their daughter were in NYC over the weekend celebrating Father’s Day and North’s birthday. The ever-fashionable tot was sporting freshly pierced ears and, naturally, a pair of diamond earrings. The studs were a mini-me version of mom Kim Kardashian’s and, presumably, a birthday gift for the one-year-old.
But it was Prince William who may have gotten the biggest treat of them all. During a charity polo match on Sunday, 11-month-old Prince George took a quick stroll using mom Kate Middleton for support. It was the first glimpse we got of the future king in action since Kate revealed last week that he had taken his first steps – and it was totally worth the wait.
Tell us: What’s your take on piercing a baby’s ears? Would you do it?
