Apparently, Prince Charles Wants a Granddaughter (No Pressure, Kate!)

Friday, May 1st, 2015

princess katePoor Princess Kate. Days past her reported due date, the pregnant mama is probably swollen, tired, and just ready to get this show on the road. To her credit, she’s being a good sport about the world’s obsession with her bump, even going so far as to send pastries to well-wishers camped outside of the hospital where she’ll evenutally deliver. Still, I have to think she’s feeling the pressure from the so-called “Great Kate Wait.”

Adding a wrinkle to things? Her father-in-law, Prince Charles. At an event this week in Windsor Castle, the next-in-line casually let it drop that he and wife Camilla are “hoping for a granddaughter.” (William and Kate have chosen not to find out their baby’s gender before the birth.) And you know if he’s telling perfect strangers his preference, he’s probably been yakking about it with his son and daughter-in-law for the last nine months.

The upside is that Prince Charles went public with his opinion this late in the game, whereas most eager grandparents-to-be let that stuff fly as soon as you tell them you’re pregnant. And talk about added pressure! The day after I broke the news to my parents, my dad and I were having lunch and he announced he knew I was having a girl. So sure was he that he even picked out a name for her: Hannah. (Um, how thoughtful?) For the next several weeks, until an ultrasound revealed I was having a boy, every conversation involved “Hannah”: How she’d love stamps as much as he does. How he would show her how to bait a hook and change a tire. How they’d be the best of friends. The happy little world he created for himself and my unborn child was so vivid that when I found out I was having a boy, I almost hesitated to tell him. I did, of course, and he took the news in stride: it took him about 20 seconds to mentally unhook his dreams of a granddaughter and latch on to the reality of a grandson.

Considering how much scrutiny the royal pregnancy has already received, my bet is that Princess Kate is a seasoned pro at deflecting pressure, even when it comes from the future king. Because royalty or no, in the end, they want what we all want for the young family: a happy, healthy baby — whenever he or she decides to arrive.

It’s Baaack! Breast Milk Ice Cream Fit for Royalty

Tuesday, April 28th, 2015

royal baba gagaHold on to your tea towels! A sweet treat is coming back just in time for the arrival of royal baby No. 2. London ice cream company The Licktators is once again stocking freezers with ‘scream made from — wait for it — breast milk. Their latest all-natural concoction, called Royal Baby Gaga, is a blend of carefully screened donated breast milk and Madagascan Vanilla.

It may sound like another unusual way to profit off of royal baby fever, but in reality, this ice cream has an altruistic bent. The brainchild of The Licktators and vocal breastfeeding supporter Victoria Hiley, Royal Baby Gaga is meant to raise awareness about the benefits of nursing. Bonus: All profits from the sale of the $22 pink and blue tubs will go to a breastfeeding charity. “There was huge support from breastfeeding women for Baby Gaga ice cream in 2011, yet some politicians still stigmatise women for breastfeeding in public,” Hiley explains in a statement.“We thought the birth of a royal baby was a great time to whip up support for mums and say that when it comes to ice cream this summer, breast is best.” (Hmm, I’m not totally sure how eating someone else’s breast milk would convince the undecided to try nursing—or remove the stigma of feeding al fresco—but hey, it’s worth a shot?)

Now, using breast milk for something other than feeding a baby is nothing new. Celebs are sampling it. Bodybuilders are downing the stuff to bulk up faster. People are even smearing it on as a facial (which, fyi, apparently works!). And although I’m a big fan of nursing—and vanilla ice cream—I can’t imagine digging into a bowl of another woman’s frozen breast milk, even if it was blended with fancy-sounding flavors. The potential safety issues alone would stop me. But if you’re feeling adventurous, you can pick up a tub of Royal Baby Gaga in select London stores and online through the summer, or make your own using the company’s DIY recipe.

We Can’t Wait for the Second Royal Baby!

Friday, April 17th, 2015

After Kate Middleton officially shared that her due date was mid- to late-April, the royal baby watch has increased!

As much as everyone loves Prince George, there’s no denying most people hope it’s a girl to balance out the boy. Some are hoping that a little princess will mean the name includes a sweet tribute to the late Princess Diana and to Kate Middleton’s mom.

E! has also reported that staffers are prepping for the upcoming birth — by putting up barricades and 24-hour no-parking signs outside St. Mary’s Hospital in London, where Prince George was born. And some superfans have even started lining outside the hospital to get a glimpse of the baby, whenever he or she arrives!

In addition to have an extra bundle of joy to love, Kate will receive another perk for giving birth: a loyalty discount for choosing the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital for her labor and delivery.

And even The Week has began speculating how the second royal birth will affect markets, fashion, and food around the world.

One thing’s for sure: William and Kate will have their hands full taking care of two kids under two, especially as Kate is planning to take a longer maternity leave.

Kate and William May Hire a Baby Nurse—It’s About Time!

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015

kate-and-williamKate and Wills are staffing up!

In a move that will surprise no parent, the royal couple is rumored to be on the hunt for a live-in maternity nurse to help out during the first few months after baby number 2 arrives in April, according to the Daily Mail. This is a total 180 from two years ago, when the Duke and Duchess refused to hire help after Prince George was born. At the time, they said they wanted to be hands-on parents, plus they had the Middletons nearby for help.

But a lot has changed since then. Their adorable babe is now a walking, talking, swimming 18-month-old. Kate’s been dealing with an epic case of hyperemesis gravidarum. And, most importantly, the seasoned parents have already done the sleep deprivation thing and have the smarts (and money) to say, “A little help here!”

Buckingham Palace hasn’t commented yet on the potential hire, but a source has said, “Kate and William loved the early weeks with Prince George, but it was hard work and the sleepless nights took their toll. Kate especially was exhausted.” Preaching to the choir here, but still, it’s comforting to see that even a future king and queen have to deal with the same new-parent stuff we do.

Of course, unlike us, Kate and William have other “official” reasons to explain their need to hire help, including following royal tradition and Kate’s desire to get back to her charity work ASAP. (Genius excuse, by the way.) Whatever they want to chalk it up to, they’ll get no judgments here for bringing on an extra set of hands. The truth is, having two kids under 2 in the house is a lot of work—even when your house is a castle.

Now it’s your turn: Did you hire help (or enlist the help of family) after your baby was born? Would you recommend it?

4 Famous Babies We Can’t Wait to Meet in 2015

Wednesday, December 31st, 2014

celebrity-babiesWhen I haven’t been busy dusting off my party shoes for tonight or sneaking the last bits of holiday desserts left in the house, I’ve been thinking about babies. Specifically, famous ones. This year has been full of ‘em: the chubby-cheeked River Blackstock, the adorable Hazel Krasinski, the dapper Otis Sudeikis—the list goes on. As much as I’ve enjoyed getting to know these cherubic celebutots, I’m just as excited about the crop of newbies due in 2015. Though it’s tough to play favorites, here are four celeb couples whose offspring I can’t wait to see.

William and Kate
Sure, Prince George‘s birth commanded the world’s attention, but the royal baby No. 2 is already nabbing plenty of headlines. At first most of them were about Kate’s debilitating morning sickness, but now that that’s behind her, the news is much brighter. Most recently, there was the couple’s successful trip to New York City and, of course, the future queen’s tasteful but chic maternity wardrobe. In fact, the burgeoning bump has already made more best-dressed lists than most A-list actresses.

Due date: April

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake
Thank heavens for Joey Fatone (a sentence I never thought I’d type, by the way). Earlier this month, the former ‘N Sync-er accidentally/on purpose confirmed what we’ve long suspected: that JT was going to be a dad. Though the low-key couple has yet to confirm that their first baby is on the way, a “source” has said the 32-year-old actress is due some time in April. Meanwhile, the paparazzi has been obsessively watching her waistline, which would be my biggest nightmare.

Due date: ?!?

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
The former Gossip Girl broke the news about her pregnancy via an artful bump pic on her website Preserve and not surprisingly has been killing it in the style department ever since. Rumors are even swirling that she’s considering starting a babywear line. The actress and her hunky husband have yet to comment on that, but the couple is already receiving high marks for handling the 9-month journey like a couple of pros. Back in October, Entertainment Tonight declared that Reynolds “already looks ready to be a dad,” while former co-star Ed Westwick recently said Lively is “rocking” pregnancy.

Due date: Some time in 2015

Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher
When it came time to spill the beans about her pregnancy, Carrie Underwood let her dogs do the talking. No matter — it was enough to set the Internet buzzing with excitement. Since then, the petite country singer has shared some insight into her pregnancy, including the two hormone-induced meltdowns she had over buying a new car and not fitting into her clothes anymore. But the biggest reveal may have happeneded during the Country Music Awards, when it came out that the American Idol was expecting a boy.

Due date: Spring
