Kanye West Spent HOW MUCH on North’s Christmas Gifts?!

Baby North West

You can say a lot about Kanye West — that he never ever smiles, that his love of leather pants is almost illegal, that he’s a genius at avoiding E! cameras. But one adjective never hurled in his direction is “cheap.” The man deals in the currency of lavish. No gesture is too over the top, especially when it comes to his family. See: his proposal at a rented-out baseball stadium, a vase wall of flowers for wife Kim, diamond starter earrings for baby North. Why would we expect him to show restraint around the holidays?

An in-the-know source told Heat magazine that the rapper has splurged on his favorite baby this Christmas. If the reports are true, then Nori is in for a stellar day. Among the loot is a tot-sized replica of Yeezy’s black SUV and—wait for it—a diamond-encrusted tiara so that she “when she plays dress-up, she can be a real princess,” the source says. (That’s not exactly how it works, but whatever floats your boat, Kanye.) Those two gifts alone supposedly set the artist back a cool $74,000, the Daily Mail reports, a figure that made me feel slightly dizzy but mostly relieved about my own kid’s holiday haul.

Full disclosure: I didn’t buy him a holiday gift until he was nearly 2. I wasn’t being stingy — I just wanted to avoid the present trap, where everyone becomes more focused about what’s under the tree or what comes after the menorah lighting than on the true spirit of the season. Though my husband and I gave him a few treats last year, this year is the first where he’s expecting and anticipating gifts. Like a lot of parents we know, we’re trying our best to keep the excess in check by only buying him a handful of presents he really wants. We’re also beginning to emphasize the idea of giving to others, both through our conversations about the holidays and by picking out toys together for children in need.

Which all sounds great in theory, but honestly, controlling the glut of holiday gifts can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. After all, our son is an only child in a home that celebrates both Christmas and Hanukkah, and is the only grandchild on my side. We also have a circle of generous friends who give him goodies, too. Translation: Much of his December is spent tearing open something shiny and awesome.

My guess is that I’m not alone in wondering how much is too much. Even Kimye seem to be feeling that one out. Kim recently said her daughter will have to work for what she wants; meanwhile, Kanye (allegedly) dropped five figures on gifts for the 18-month-old. As a mom who’s also trying to balance celebrating and spoiling, I take some strange comfort in the fact that even celeb parents are figuring out where to draw the line.

Now it’s your turn: What are your gift-giving plans this holiday?

Designer Bags? $100 Bills? That’s Just How These Celeb Babies Roll

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014

alena-jonasIs my kid spoiled?

That was the thought running through my mind the other day. We had just left Walgreens, where he sweet-talked me into buying him a set of washable paints, a sheet of stickers, and yet another toy car. A few days earlier, my mother gifted him with a bag full of goodies before she flew back home, and before all of that, we spent a weekend hitting up every kid-friendly attraction in Boston (and trust me, there are A LOT of them). Even though my husband and I swore early on that our only child wouldn’t be swimming in stuff, here we are, three years later, with drawers chock-full of drugstore cars.

I was feeling pretty bad about my parenting skills until I read about how some children of Hollywood elite are living large, and suddenly, my kiddo’s $3 Corvette didn’t seem so bad. First up is North West, who gets my vote as the ultimate Material Girl. There was the designer dress she wore to her parents’ lavish wedding, then the enormous diamond studs she sported on her first birthday. Now, the celebutot has moved onto handbags — you know, for all the pacis and toys she’s no doubt carrying around with her. But forget Coach — for North, only the best will do, and in this case, that means Yves Saint Laurent. The 14-month-old was photographed on mom’s hip wearing a studded YSL purse that costs as much as a mortgage payment.

But Kimye’s kid isn’t the only rich baby flaunting her wealth. Kevin Jonas’ daughter, Alena, is also clearly rolling in the dough. Uncle Joe recently posted a picture of the 7-month-old waving a $100 bill in the air, E! Online reports. The caption? ”My niece Alena has expensive taste.” The proud uncle also created a video of it and set the whole thing to Jay Z’s “100$ Bill.” Judging by the huge smile on Alena’s face, this is probably not the first time she’s made it rain, and I have a feeling it won’t be the last.

9 Things We’ve Learned About Kimye as Parents (So Far)

Friday, June 13th, 2014

kanye-kim-northForget Disney World — the Kardashian-West house might be the happiest place on earth right now. Hot on the heels of their lavish Italian wedding and never-ending honeymoon, the famous family celebrates not one but two birthdays this week. Kanye rang in his 37th on June 8, and daughter North is turning 1 on Father’s Day. (Best. Gift. Ever.)

As a couple, Kimye is anything but understated and private: He gifts her with a wall of flowers, she shares a picture of it with her millions of followers. But as parents, they seem to be a little more, well, normal. (Okay, not counting the Parisian getaways, spare homes, or famous friends.) So in honor of Nori’s first birthday, here’s what we’ve learned so far about Kim and Kanye as mom and dad.

Believe it or not, they didn’t always care about their looks. Sure, Mr. and Mrs. West are all leather pants and six packs now, but a year ago, they were like every other new parent: too tired to put on makeup or wear anything but a t-shirt and stretchy pants.

Kim is turning North into a mini-me. Kim confessed to Vogue that she puts North in Kanye’s big chains, gives her Louis Vuitton handbags, and takes pictures of her “all the time.” She even arranged to have the baby wear a matching custom Givenchy gown at the wedding.

They’re making sure she runs with the cool crowd. Artist Jeff Koons, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris Carine Roitfeld — these are just some of the popular kids North has rubbed shoulders with so far.

Kim keeps North close — even when she’s far away. When the couple jetted off to Paris last year, leaving North at home for the first time, new mom Kim wore a chic mom necklace to keep her baby girl (literally) close to her heart.

They’re already teaching her the importance of working hard and playing hard. When Kimye landed a coveted Vogue cover, North was right there with them, going skin-to-skin with Daddy and snuggling up against Mommy’s custom wedding dress. And when Yeezus goes on tour, he makes sure a nursery is set up backstage at every venue so North can snooze during sets. (Which, amazingly, she does.)

They want North to be bilingual. Rumor has it that the power couple has hired a French tutor to teach their kiddo to parlez-vous francais — even though she just said her first word (“Pa”).

They totally get the importance of date night. Kimye caught some flack for hitting up Paris Fashion Week and, later, taking a multi-leg honeymoon sans baby. But as any parent knows, you’ve got to squeeze in QT together whenever you can get it.

They make family a top priority. No shocker here — the Kardashians are a famously tight crew, so it only makes sense that North’s BFF is none other than cousin Penelope Disick. In fact, a source told People that the couple want more kids, and now that the wedding hoopla is over, they may just get their wish.

They’re head over heels in love with their daughter. Sure, Kim might have all but cropped North out of a mom-and-daughter pic, but she and Kanye are clearly nuts about their little girl. On Mother’s Day, the new mama tweeted, “This little girl has changed my world in more ways than I ever could have imagined! Being a mom is the most rewarding feeling in the world!” She also bragged about Kanye to Ellen Degeneres, saying, “He is honestly the most amazing dad. He loves her so much.”

Kim or Kourtney: Which Kardashian Sister Parents Like You Do?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

Kourtney and Kim KardashianThey’re sisters, moms of girls, and business partners, but when it comes to parenting styles, are Kim Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian on the same page?

Both of the Keeping Up with the Kardashians stars have been in the news lately—Kourtney, to promote the clothing line Kardashian Kids, and Kim, because of that Vogue cover with Kanye West—and both have talked about the things they do as parents.

As Us Weekly reports, Kourtney told Redbook magazine that she’s a proponent of Attachment Parenting. “It’s what came naturally to me; I didn’t plan it,” she told Redbook. “When I had Mason, I just felt really attached to him and wanted to bring him everywhere. He ended up sleeping with me, and I breastfed for 14 months.” She continued, “I’m sure all the family thinks I’m insane for having them in the bed and breastfeeding for a long time, but whatever.”

Kim, meanwhile, told Vogue that she likes to play dress-up with baby North West. “I take pictures of her all the time and dress her up … I put Kanye’s big chains around her, and I put a little Louis bag and some Jordans, and I was like, ‘What up, Daddy?’”

Kourtney talked openly at a promotional event about how she alters Mason’s old clothes for Penelope so she can wear them, which seems a far cry from North West’s already famous collection of designer duds. (I can’t imagine that Kourtney’s kids don’t have the same access to adorable designer baby gear, but I admire her sense of thriftiness. Or her interest in recycling. Or whatever reason she has for putting her kid in hand-me-downs like the rest of us.)

I’m sure that Kim is an involved, loving mom, and I know that one funny little anecdote in Vogue does not define a parenting style. But the more I read about Kourtney, the more I relate to her as a mom and actually, dare I admit, kind of admire the way she’s raising her kids amidst the craziness (er, kraziness) of Hollywood fame. What about you?
