How Motherhood Impacts Olivia Wilde’s Booming Career

Monday, April 20th, 2015

Olivia WildeIt’s been a busy week for Olivia Wilde.

At New York City’s Tribeca Film Festival, the actress attended the premiere of her feature film, Meadowland, about a woman whose son goes missing, shepherded the debut of Body Team 12—which she helped produce—about community health workers dealing with the Ebola crisis in Liberia, and she also celebrated baby Otis’ first birthday today!

The A-lister told Parents that her role as a mom definitely impacts her work. “I’ve always considered it our responsibility to leave the world better than how we found it,” said Wilde. “Now that’s probably intensified having a child of my own.”

Wilde certainly walks the walk when it comes to giving back to the community at large. Wilde spoke about how the Ebola epidemic not only took the lives of thousands in Liberia, but left many children orphaned when both of their parents fell victim to the disease. Body Team 12 is helping to raise money to support orphans of the Ebola crisis (ebolaorphanproject.com). “As a mother, of course, that strikes a chord with me but just as a human being for all of us it’s such an important project,” said Wilde.

Motherhood seems to weave in naturally to who Wilde is, while deepening her connection to her work. Still, for today, we hope she can take a break and celebrate this happy milestone with her family.

Zoe Saldana Wants to Help New Moms Get Fit!

Monday, April 13th, 2015

zoe-saldana

A couple of months ago, Zoe Saldana made her first public appearance since giving birth to twin boys Cy and Bowie in November. Though she was at the VES Awards to honor director J. J. Abrams, all anyone wanted to talk about was her body. “The Avatar actress’s toned arms and legs and slim waistline [are] certainly the envy of new mothers,” the Daily Mail enthused. Meanwhile, People.com reported she “looked twice as nice.”

By all appearances, it seemed like Saldana was yet another Hollywood mom who reclaimed her enviable figure mere days after giving birth. But as the A-lister revealed Friday on Facebook, looks can be deceiving. In a post so candid you almost forgot a famous person wrote it, the new mom discussed the “dramatic” changes pregnancy and childbirth wrought on her body: exhaustion, an out-of-whack thyroid, weak joints—you name it. “My body was really bent out of shape after the boys were born,” she admitted, likening childbirth to “a kind of trauma” the body experiences. (Preach on, Zoe.)

So two months ago, the celeb mama started the “slow,” “painful,” and “frustrating” process of rebuilding herself. Her reasons were many, but none included “squeezing into a tight red-carpet dress.” “Bouncing back feels impossible,” she wrote, “but I know it is important as a woman, and now a mommy, to not give up. I am determined to get my energy back and find balance for my body before these little guys start walking, and before I go back to work.”

To that end, she’s improved her diet and is easing back into exercise with the help of a trainer-friend. It’s a regimen many of us try when we reach our postnatal rock bottom. It’s a good one. It works, provided you stick with it. And if you’re taking care of a baby, it’s easier said than done. But Saldana has figured out that there’s strength in numbers, and that the collective sisterhood of mothers can be a pretty powerful resource to tap into. So she invited other new moms to join her in the quest to get healthy. “I know many of you have gone through this or are going through it as we speak,” she continued. “Let’s do it together. Let’s talk about it, hear each other out, and seek advice when we need it. …I will be sharing with you what I do, what I eat and how I feel about it in hopes that it will be of any help to you. Cool?”

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s Baby Has Arrived!

Saturday, April 11th, 2015

Jessica Biel and Justin TimberlakeWe speculated on Jessica Biel’s growing baby bump for months until she could no longer hide the fact: she was expecting a baby with Justin Timberlake!

Now, the much-anticipated #babyoftheyear has arrived, and it’s a BOY! Biel has given birth to the couple’s first child, son Silas Randall.

No other details have been made available, but the couple’s reps exclusively told People that “mom and baby are doing well and dad is ‘ecstatic’.”

While the super-private couple never officially announced the pregnancy, JT confirmed the news when he posted a sweet baby announcement on his birthday. “This year, I’m getting the GREATEST GIFT EVER. CAN’T WAIT. #BoyOrGirl #YouNeverKnow #WeDontEvenKnow #WeAreTakingBets,” the singer shared on Instagram.

During her pregnancy, Biel was spotted out and about in L.A., keeping healthy and fit with prenatal yoga. She was also busy planning for the opening of her organic kids-themed restaurant, Au Fudge, which will serve rainbow-colored items on the menu.

We are beyond excited for these two first-time parents, who we know will make an amazing mom and dad.

Congratulations to JT and Jessica!

Why Every Nursing Mom Should Rally Around Alyssa Milano

Friday, April 10th, 2015

alyssa milanoOf all the aggravations I went through as a nursing mom, pumping was easily the worst. I hated it. It wasn’t so much that I felt like a cow being milked (I did). What I really couldn’t stand was hooking up all the tubes, placing my boob just so in the suction cup thingy, and praying I wouldn’t hear the inevitable hiss of a loose connection. Oh yeah, and trying to think happy baby thoughts the whole time so my milk would come down. But perhaps most defeating of all for me was seeing the measly ounces I managed to eke out after all of the hullabaloo.

So when I read about Alyssa Milano’s recent scuffle over her breast milk at London’s Heathrow Airport, I was especially riled up. The actress, mom of two and #brelfie rabblerouser was trying to pass through security with the impressive 10 ounces of milk she pumped on the plane. (FYI, she doesn’t recommend it.) But because her baby wasn’t with her at the airport — and because the stash was larger than the allowed 5 ounces — airport officials confiscated the milk. After watching her 10 ounces of hard work go (probably) down the drain, Milano did what any of us would do: She vented.

After tweeting that it was “not okay” for Heathrow’s security to take her breast milk — and leave her shampoo and other toiletries intact — she railed against the airport. She asked some obvious questions (“They said they would let the pumped milk through if I had the baby with me. Why would I need to pump if I had the baby with me????”) and even offered up a solution (“@HeathrowAirport I would have happily spread milk in different containers, which I travel with, to comply to those liquid rules. Instead, milk was taken away with no discussion. Shampoo, lotions, etcetera were simply tested and handed back with no issue. Makes no sense at all.”).

But despite the high-profile complaints, the airport stood behind the decision. “Hi Alyssa. Unfortunately, without a baby present, the government requires all liquids in carry-ons to follow the 100ml rule,” was its official tweeted response.

While I’m all for following the rules, I’m siding with Milano on this one. Making and collecting 10 ounces of milk takes a lot of work, and to flush it down the drain without even offering to inspect it or let the mom break it up into pre-approved bottles isn’t just bad policy, it’s also incredibly wasteful.

Now it’s your turn: Do you think Alyssa Milano had a good reason to gripe here?

Rachael Leigh Cook Gives Birth to a Second Baby

Thursday, April 9th, 2015

To cap off a recent flurry of news related to She’s All That and Freddie Prinze, Jr., actress Rachael Leigh Cook gave birth to her second child, a son, this past Saturday. The actress waited a few days before sharing a baby announcement on Twitter:

Welcome to the party, Little Buddy. We love you so much. http://t.co/tvIBcGpnkJ

— Rachael Leigh Cook (@RachaelLCook) April 8, 2015

Cook and her husband, actor Daniel Gillies, who currently stars on the CW show The Originals, named their son Theodore Vigo Sullivan Gillies. Baby Theodore almost rivals the Duggar Dillard baby in weight and length, at 8 lbs., 14 ounces, and 20.5 inches. The couple also have a daughter, Charlotte Easton, who was born in 2013.

The second-time mom and dad didn’t reveal their pregnancy news until late January. In a statement, the couple shared, “We’re as happy as we were surprised by this wonderful news! We haven’t slept since 2013 and welcome advice from all parents who survived Two Under Two.”

In an interview with Wetpaint.com last year, Cook also talked about balancing work and motherhood: “I’m certainly loving my time with [Charlotte]. I don’t think I’ll ever completely put work aside, but that’s just part of who I am. I think that loving what you do and having your child see that is a good example to set. That’s the plan, and I’m sticking with it.”
