In a Nutshell

Tuesday, September 9th, 2014

One day during snack time, my son confused the almonds in his trail mix with peanuts, so I corrected him. A few days later, my husband said to Liam, “You are such a little peanut.” He replied, “No, I’m an almond.”

Disappointing Dessert

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

My in-laws were visiting for lunch. At the end of the meal, I realized I had forgotten about the cookies in the oven. I rushed to get them out, but it was too late and they were very over-done. My daughter refused to let me throw them away though and insisted on giving one a try. After taking her first bite, she paused and asked, “Mom, why do these cookies have bricks on them?”

Food Frustration

Wednesday, August 27th, 2014

My daughter was frustrated because she couldn’t get her corn to stay on her fork long enough to make it to her mouth.  Finally, she picked up some corn with her fingers, threw it on the fork, and said, “Hang on, guys!”

Against the Grain

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

I usually cut off the crust for my son’s peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but one day I was in a rush and forgot. Joe was picking at the crust, so I told him it was just grain, which is good for us. He backed away slowly with a very suspicious look on his face and said, “I don’t know about this. Grain makes me nervous.”

Frozen Food

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

One afternoon, I was canning and freezing vegetables when my son asked what I was doing. I told him that the sweet corn was in season now and that I was going to freeze it for winter. He asked seriously, “Why do we need that much corn? Are we going to hibernate all winter?”
