Baby Shower Ideas For The Second Time Around

Don't know how to plan a party for the second (or third or fourth or fifteenth) time around? Here are a few ideas.

Baby Shower Cake

The Theme

  • Invite men and women. Encourage couples to attend.
  • Pick a standard party decor, rather than a traditional baby shower theme -- which can be a bit too heavy on pastels and baby animals for a mixed gathering.
  • Ask the guests of honor for gift suggestions ahead of time. They may have specific household or hobby items in mind.
  • If your guests will be bringing children, prepare separate kid-friendly food.
  • Display historical photos of the Mom and Dad. They can be baby pictures, wedding photos, pictures of when the couple first met.
  • Give "couples" door prizes. For example, longest-married, most recently married, most children, youngest children, etc.

    Game: Venus and Mars

    Preparation time: 5 minutes

    Playing time: 20-30 minutes

    Players: All present

      What you'll need

      • index cards
      • pens

        At the party

        • Divide the players into two teams, men vs. women.
        • Send each team into a separate room or on opposite ends of a big space.
        • Give each team index cards and a pen and have them come up with gender-based questions designed to stump the other team. The women might ask: What's a bobbin? What is Martha Stewart's area of expertise? How much does a newborn weigh? The men might ask: What's the role of the carburetor? Who played in the first Super Bowl? What does RAM stand for?
        • After the cards are finished, place them in two piles in the center of the room. Each team member will stand and take a card from the opposite team's pile and try to answer the questions. Teams get one point for each correct answer. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Game: Family Night at the Movies

        Preparation time: 5 minutes

        Playing time: 15 minutes

        Players: All present

          What you'll need

          • paper and pencils for players
          • a timer

            Before the party

            • Collect writing materials.

              At the party

              • Set timer for two minutes.
              • Have guests write down as many movie titles as they can think of that contain words like mother, father, baby, child or other family member. Examples: The Parent Trap, Father of the Bride, Sister Act. The player who comes up with the most titles in the allotted time wins.

                Game: Who Am I?

                Preparation time: 10 minutes

                Playing time: 15 minutes

                Players: All present

                  What you need

                  • Hello, my name is... name tag stickers
                  • a marker

                    Before the party

                    • Write the names of famous people on the stickers.

                      At the party

                      • Place a sticker on the back of each player.
                      • Players mingle and ask each other questions to try and figure out the name on their own backs. Players may only answer yes or no to questions. First person to correctly guess the name on his or her own back wins.
