Many parents know how to choose toys that are safe for their children. But do you know how store your child's toys safely? Follow these guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics to make sure that your child's toys don't become a hazard to her.

1. Keep toys on a shelf or in a toy chest. They should be out of the way and off the floor so they can't be stepped on or tripped over.

2. Store toys age-appropriately. A toy designed for an older child should be kept far out of reach of a curious toddler.

3. Choose a toy chest wisely. The safest toy chest is one without a lid. If it has a lid, make sure it's sturdy, with locking supports and safe hinges. Look for smooth, finished edges with ventilation holes to prevent suffocation if your child becomes trapped inside.

4. Never store a toy in its original packaging. Staples can cause cuts and plastic wrap can lead to choking or suffocation.

5. Examine toys regularly. Look for damaged or broken parts that may be dangerous, such as splinters on wooden toys, small loose parts, or exposed wires.

6. Never leave metal toys outside overnight. Rain, snow, or even dew may cause them to rust. A child is at risk for developing tetanus, a bacterial disease that affects the nervous system, if he's cut by rusty metal.

7. Repair or replace any broken parts. Broken parts can fall off and pose danger to a child. Missing parts may expose a potentially dangerous part of the toy.
