Long-Term Preemie Issues
Premature babies are more prone than most to face complications -- both short- and long-term. Learn about which long-term complications might arise, according to the University of Wisconsin Center for Perinatal Care, and what you can do about them.
Former preemies are more likely than full-term babies to suffer from learning deficits or learning disabilities at school. Up to 45 percent of infants weighing less than 3 1/4 pounds at birth have one or more abnormalities on testing at school age. It's usually not possible to predict at the time of discharge or during early development who might develop these difficulties. Common problems include:
- Coordination problems: Difficulty writing, drawing, or doing jigsaw puzzles.
- Language problems: Difficulty following directions, learning to read, or remembering words.
- Thinking problems: Difficulty with memory, spatial relationships, or abstract concepts.

My daughter was born 6 weeks early. She has just recently turned 6 months old. She is doing the milestones for her age group (not her corrected age) Although she is not crawling yet, I am not worried. My son, who was 10days over due, didn't crawl until he was about 9 months old, and walked by his first birthday. Some premmies have problems, the earlier they are born the more problems they are likely to have, HOWEVER, ever baby is different
9/10/2010 10:05:22 PM Report AbuseMy Daughter was born 2 months early, she still has yet to crawl Stand, Walk... etc. she doesnt even look as tho she is interested in pulling herself up yet. she does get on all fours and rock back and forth... and she does the army crawl.. but other than that.. not much. she talks like crazy, and loves to hear herself laugh hysterically at 5:30 a.m. every morning. lol she holds her bottle, can feed herself cheerios, she even has 2 teeth. she is 11 months old on the 6th of July.
