If your baby has a sudden fever over 101 degrees F. and is fussy but doesn't seem to have any other symptoms, she could have a bladder or urinary-tract infection. UTIs are particularly common in girls, because bacteria from poop can enter the urethra. However, according to a recent study in The New England Journal of Medicine, only 16 percent of children ages 3 to 36 months who came to the doctor with a high fever were actually given a urine culture to test for a UTI. Call your doctor if your child pees more often than usual; has bad-smelling, bloody, or cloudy urine; or has a fever over 101 degrees F.

My 19month old daughter developed a high fever without flu symptoms. Her fevers were as high as 103. We took to the ER twice and she was misdiagnosed. We took her home with antibiotics for ear infections! However, her fevers continued. Finally we took her to the ER again, and the pediatrician on call decided to test her urine. She tested positive for a UTI. It¿s been 7 days with fever, chills pain.

12/16/2009 01:39:13 PM Report AbuseMy daughter was diagnosed with urinary reflux when she was 10 months. SHe had a sudden fever and no other symptoms along with that fever, not even motrin was working for her. I took her to her pediatrician, I was called back with the urine results stating her urine #'s were high, so he decided to have her get an ultrasound and an x-ray which then confirmed she has reflun stage 3, she has been on antibiotics since and will get re-checked in July

12/10/2009 09:38:55 PM Report AbuseMy baby also was hospitalized for three days with a kidney infection at 11 weeks. They found he has a condition called kidney reflux, where urine pushes back into the kidneys causing constant infection. He is on prophylactic antibiotics.

12/10/2009 11:33:05 AM Report AbuseThis can be very serious if not given the proper treatment right away. She started with a UTI that was not diagnosed quickly enough (even though I had mentioned the strong urine odor and frequent urination...along with a fever of 103). The infection ended up going to her kidneys and then to her bloodstream. She was in the hospital for a week with an antibiotic IV drip. If you suspect UTI, insist on a urine culture or to start antibiotics right away.
