Bath Time & Fever CuresBathing Basics

Old Advice: Babies need daily baths.

New Advice: It's not necessary to bathe an infant more than two or three times a week, as long as you wash her face, hands, and bottom in between full baths. If your baby enjoys baths and you choose to bathe her every day, however, use soap only on the face, hands, and bottom. Using soap all over the body will dry out her skin.

Fighting Fever

Old Advice: When infants are feverish, give them baby aspirin and rub them down with alcohol to cool their skin.

New Advice: Never give a baby (or any child under 18) aspirin, because it increases the risk of Reye's syndrome, a potentially fatal disorder that can occur in children recovering from a viral illness. Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen instead. "Alcohol is counterproductive to bringing down a fever because it evaporates on the skin, causing a baby to shiver, which actually generates more heat," Dr. Grunbaum says.

My son walked at 10mths and we would put soft shoes on him only if we were going somewhere. My orthopedic surgeon said children who are walking should ALWAYS walk in their barefeet. His reasons were shoes give a false sense of their footings & can cause ankle problems. My son loves his shoes & we never have a problem getting him to wear them, he is 2 now. My personal reason is they will be wearing shoes for the rest of his life a couple of years w/out is not going to hinder him.

my family has owned and operated a fitting shoe store since 1946. a shoe with a flexible but firm rubber sole will help your baby walk. my family has found that if the kids don't have shoes early they tend to never want to wear them and fight when trying on new shoes or getting their foot measured. for the sake of argument, wearing shoes early doesn't do anywhere near the damage ill fitting shoes do for the rest of your child's life, or the parents for that matter.
