What Is GERD?

GERD, short for gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a condition that often goes undiagnosed in babies. About one baby in 20 suffers from GERD, but it's often mistaken for colic.

In fact, an equal number of babies experience problem reflux that requires treatment but is not classified as a disease. This condition, known simply as gastroesophageal reflux (GER), can be even trickier to diagnose because its symptoms are less severe. Untreated, both GER and GERD can cause complications such as respiratory problems. But with behavior modification and medicine, if needed, reflux can be managed until your child outgrows the condition -- often by 1 year of age.

Later I found out the problem is common in the father's side of family (yeah, now he tells me after rushing to the doctor) and so I just trusted God all would be well. Nothing was a long term solution. Eventually the condition was grown out. It was a very distressing period though but we got over it. I'm sharing all to is real this to encourage anyone who is real stressed with this condition to take heart.

The mistake we made was to hold up immediately causing the fluids to remain in the throat creating an obstruction. Personally I held my child up for hours just hoping all would be well, but no sooner than laid in the bed... Also tried feeding in smaller amounts (breast fed that is) and all the other suggestions given in the article, save for medication.

My baby had a real serious spit up problem. My mother was terrified as she had never seen this in all her years and would grab the baby while spitting up. That was not a good idea, as we later found out from the doctor. Babies are designed by natured to tilt their heads if they spit up. However when grown-ups do intervene, we should hold the baby flat or slant until the air passage is cleared, then we can hold the baby up.

im almost 100% sure my 7 week old son has this. Hes had all these symptoms since he was born, but he happened to be sleeping when i took him to the doctor. So the doc looked at him and said "he looks just fine to me". He wouldn't even look into seeing what the problem was and made it off to be like I was just an overly concerned mother. Unfortunately he is the only one in our area that accepts my sons insurance.

My son dxed w/GERD at his 1 mo appt-he was vomiting every day.Hs wt gain wasonly due to us holding him uprightfor45 min afterEVERY feeding, feeding small frequent meals&burping lots. When he started the zantac it was like a switch was flipped. He could keep food downand wasn't screaming after each meal.Docs prescribe drugs to treat medical conditions when other "natural" strategies don't work. For our son the zantac was(and still isat 6mos old) a lifesaver.

My daughter was diagnosed with GERD at 3 days old. She had suffered gas pain, vomiting, flatulence and eventually began refusing feedings. She became dehydrated and had to be hospitalized. The peds doctor who admitted her would not allow her to be discharged until she was feeding properly. It took a day to diagnose her with congential lactose intolerance. Two days after beginning a new formula, she had no feeding problems. The initial diagnosis of GERD was incorrect.

My son was diagnosed with severe GERD at 3 weeks. The first 3 weeks of life he was spitting breast milk up and was not gaining weight. The doctor did a xray and thats how he was diagnosed. He sees a gastrointerologist because the GERD gave him seizure like symptoms. I breastfed until he was 9 months then started him on Alimentum by Similac plus he is on prilosec. He is delayed in development and the dr's are saying its from the GERD. He is 1 years tomorrow and I hope he grows out of it soon.

I would never recommend giving a baby medicine unless other remedies have not worked. Such as changing formulas, thickening formula with rice cereal and keeping baby upright after feedings. Both my children had horrible reflux, i mean exorcist like projectile vomiting after every feeding. Only had that not worked would they try something unnatural as medication. It makes me scared to think that doctors are just putting infants on drugs without trying other things first.

Great article. My son had severe GERD, resulting in FTT for four years. He was below the lowest centiles throughout that time. It was hard to get a diagnosis. It can be a tough time for a new mother. The endless crying (I logged an average of 16 hours per day when he was tiny ) and severe broken nights take their toll on the whole family, especially the poor baby who is suffering. The more known about it the better. Your article would have been so useful to us in those early days.

Our son had pretty bad reflux. He started of with Xantac, which didn't help much at all. We tried Prilosec and Prevacid. In the end Prevacid worked the best for him. The other part was his food. We switched him to Alimentum because he was also diagnosed with a milk-protein allergy. One the Prevacid and Alimentum were in his system, it was a night and day difference and he was a whole new kid. Still spit up like a champion, but the crying stopped and he was just a normal "happy spitter".

My son was mis-diagnosed at 3 weeks for Colic and he was on 3 different formula's and now on straight amino-acid based formula and Prilosec. He is now 10 weeks and is doing so much better!

My six week old was just diagnosed with acid reflux and was given zantac as well, but her doctor also changed her formula to soy to help with the reflux on top of the medicine. I tried the soy and she started having some skin reaction instantly so we change back to her old formula. Gosh i hope the medicine helps.

Hey AHiller17--I talked to my doctor today about it--because my 2 week old has been having issues w/ spitting up and throwing up. My mom has acid reflux--that's why I called the doctor in the first place. They told me that the medicine would not keep him from spitting/throwing up--but it will neutralize the acid that's causing the pain--which is what you really want anyway. Hope that helps!

You know I have the same problem. It happens in the evening for us too. I took him to the hospital and they said it could be the formula he is on. He is really fussy and holds his feet up towards his chest and has gas. I GIVE HIM GAS DROPS WITH HIS FORMULA. i DON'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM EVERY DAY THOUGH. THANKS.

my 9mnth old started waking up crying at night and not wanting to be put down (at 2am) it seemed like he was uncomfortable but I wasn't sure why. I thought maybe he was teething- then I thought maybe it was gas but the problem didn't resolve so I thought maybe it was colic until the doctor prescribed zantac. Now I give him a dose 1/2 hr before his bed time bottle and he's fine. I would never have guessed that was the problem as he's ok during the day but I guess something at night triggers it.
