An occupational surname for either a wagon driver or someone who built wagons. Motion-picture actor John Wayne brought much attention to the name starting in 1928. Born Marion Robert Morrison, he assumed the stage name 'John Wayne" after Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne. More recently, Canadian Wayne Gretzky, one of hockey's greatest all-time players, also comes to mind.
