Derived from "scarlata" which was an occupational surname given to a person who dyed or sold brightly colored fabrics. The name landed on the popularity chart after the debut of the 1939 award-winning film "Gone With the Wind" based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell featuring heroine Katie Scarlett O'Hara, better known simply as Scarlett. It's currently associated with film actress Scarlett Johansson who first made a name for herself in the 1998 film, "The Horse Whisperer."
