A form of the Dutch surname "de Roedt." Brought to the U.S. by colonel William Rhett in 1698.Best-known for Rhett Butler, the character in Margaret Mitchell's 1936 best-selling novel "Gone with the Wind." Motion picture actor Clark Gable received an academy award nomination for his role in the 1939 film. In popular use since 1955.
