Form of the name Mael Coluim, which refers to Saint Columba, a 6th-century monk who is credited with Scotland's conversion to Christianity. The name of the prince of Scotland who became king after Macbeth murdered his father. Shakespeare based his play, "Macbeth," on these events. African-American parents use the name in honor of civil rights activist, Malcolm X. Actor Denzel Washington who appeared in the title role of the 1992 film, "Malcolm X," named his son, Malcolm. Actor Harrison Ford also has a son named Malcolm.
