Latin and feminine form of the Roman family name Caecilius. A notable bearer of the name is legendary Saint Cecilia, a 3rd-century martyr sentenced to die for refusing to worship Roman gods who became the patron saint of music and musicians. Another famous bearer was a 17th century Queen of Poland, known as Cecilia Renata of Austria. Recognized as the feminine form of Cecil listed among the top 300 from the 1800s until 1963 and again beginning in 1991, where it currently continues to climb the chart because of its "ia" ending preferred by so many parents.
