A form of the Irish name Brighid that's associated with the goddess of fire, poetry and wisdom and daughter of the god Dagda in Irish mythology. Name was also borne by the patron saint of Ireland who established a convent at Kildare during the 5th century and Saint Bridget of Sweden, who founded an order of nuns in the 14th century. It became known during the 1950s and 1960s for French actress and sex symbol Brigitte Bardot. More recently influenced by actress Bridget Fonda, the daughter of Peter Fonda and granddaughter of Henry Fonda, and model and actress Bridget Moynahan. The 2001 movie, "Bridget Jones's Diary," starring Renee Zellweger in the title role brought attention to the name in the 2000s.
