A fisherman who became one of the earliest disciples of Jesus. According to the New Testament, Jesus changed his name from Simon to Peter. Considered a saint in the Catholic Church and the first bishop of Rome. Peter the Great, the 18th century czar of Russia is another notable namesake. Often used in literature and nursery rhymes. In the U.S., peaked prior to 1900, but not disappearing by any means.
