Adopted from Greek mythology for the wife of Odysseus who spent time weaving while she waited 20 years for her husband's return from the Trojan War. The name has since been associated with faithfulness. It's been used sporadically since the 19th century but influenced since 2001 by Penelope Cruz, the first Spanish actress to be nominated for an Academy Award in the best actress category. The name is also linked with "penelops" which means "duck."
