A minor prophet and the author of the book of Malachi in the Old Testament. Malachy was a 12th century saint in Ireland. The name has seen a revival in popularity since 1987.
We chose the name Malachi for our son because we wanted a biblical name that wasn't completely unfamiliar to the American ear (Sosthenes or Xerxes) but that wasn't common either (Michael or Jacob). We were going for "I've heard that name, but I don't know anyone named that" and I think we succeeded. Also, our son has red hair, so people often assume it's an Irish name, which is fine with me as well.
