In the Old Testament, the third of Jacob's 12 sons. The Levites, one of the 12 tribes of the Israelites, was named after him. In the New Testament, Matthew's given name before he changed it. Peaked in popularity before 1900.
We too, knew no one personally who had the name Levi or who'd named one of their kids that. ...until we named our son 14 months ago. Now it's no longer as unique as we thought it would be. Oh well. I don't regret not changing our mind at the last minute. I'd rather he grew up knowing a Levi here and there, than us (and him) thinking that 'he was always going to be Levi and now he's -------'.
