This is the name of the central character in poems by the 7th-century Arab poet known as Qays. The poem, "Leyli and Majnun," later inspired British rock guitarist, Eric Clapton, to write one of rock music's famous love songs, "Layla," in 1970. The name debuted on the popularity chart in 1972, the same year the song first landed a spot on the music charts and then again 20 years later when the song was a success again. Boxing champion Laila Ali uses a form of the name.

My daughter's name is Layla and we named her after the song by Eric Clapton too. :) We love her name. She is 4 now and a very strong and determined little girl, just like her name implies.

10/3/2011 10:46:44 PM Report AbuseMy name is Layla and I was named after the song by Eric Clapton. I've always loved that my name was so unique, so I'm rather dismayed to see it's in the top 15 names. It used to be ranked #915 nationally and was a hidden gem. Too sad.
