The Spanish form of Ishmael. In the Bible, the eldest son of Abraham and his wife's handmaiden, Hagar. He's later referred to as the patriarch of the Arabs. Another famous bearer is the narrator in the 1851 novel, "Moby-Dick," by Herman Melville. He refers to himself as "Ishmael" in the first line of the book.
