What Your Child's Name Says About You

Baby Naming Basics

Choosing your child's name is a big decision--after all, he'll be walking around with it for the rest of his life. And according to Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard, when a child is born, the name reflects more on you than him. "The name doesn't belong to you--you're making the decision because your child can't do it for himself--but what you choose does say a lot about your personality."

But as your child gets older, the name will also reflect on him--especially when he's doing things like sending out job resumes. "People do draw conclusions based on someone's name," says Wattenberg. "It sends out such a strong signal before the person even walks into the room."

So how do you make sure you choose wisely? "When deciding on a name, you want to see it from the child's point of view and how she or he will have to live with it throughout their lives," says Jennifer Moss, author of The One-in-a-Million Baby Name Book and founder of BabyNames.com. "Try the name out at your local coffee shop. How do you feel giving that as your name? What kind of reaction do you get and how does it make you feel?"

Check out our rundown of what your top picks say about your personality.

We have one girl, Zoeya. We wanted to choose names that reflect our religion, Islam. Zoeya means, life, alive, full of life and joyous. It suits her personality. Muslims believe you should choose a name for your child with a good meaning because it will affect their personality. We ultimately chose this name because of the meaning and because we thought it was beautiful.

Selah (pronounced See-lah)--from Psalms. The biological dad came up with it -- my only stipulation for a name choice was that it not be a name of anyone I know so that the child could be his/her own person. I have a brother named 'Kai'--hormone-filled Mama came up with it while sitting on a beach, 9 months' pregnant. We didn't know at the time that it means "Ocean" in Hawaiian.

I chose my son's name Trace from these personal guidelines: -Uncommon -Usual spelling -Un-weird -Starts with "T" I LOVE the name. It's uncommon, but it's not too uncommon that people have a hard time pronouncing it and shiz. I think his name suits him. I love thinking of pretty names all the time (even though I don't have but one child. lol) It's like a hobby of mine to look at and choose names. lol I just love it. Trace Anthony <3

Phoenix Willow Mackenzie-Phoenix like the bird rising from the ashes because we lost the baby before her, so it seemed symbolic. Willow because I wanted her to be gentle, like a Willow tree branch. Mackenzie means fire born and wise ruler. Then we have Soleil Nova Lilith-she is very fiery, like the sun.Nova like a bright star burst. Lilith, is the great goddess. we have Gwyneth Arya Cosette.Gwyneth meaning happiness. Arya means noble and truthful. Cosette means little one.
