A surname derived from the female name, Emma, fashionable during the Middle Ages. Popular as a male name in the U.S. early on, but has endured throughout the years. Possibly helped by circus clown, Emmett Kelly, best-known for playing the character, Weary Willie. His son, Emmett Kelly, Jr., created a similar Weary Willie figure.
