A form of the Latin geographical name Americus that refers to the continent discovered by Amerigo Vespucci in 1507. Used sporadically as a given name since the late 1800s until actress America Ferrera became known to audiences first in the 2002 and 2005 films "Real Women Have Curves" and "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" before landing the starring role in the popular television series, "Ugly Betty" in 2006.
