Originated from Alwine. Alvin York, the World War I hero and recipient of the Medal of Honor, is a namesake. His life story was told in the 1941 film, "Sergeant York," starring Gary Cooper in the title role. Also known for the fictional singing group, "Alvin and the Chipmunks," created in 1958.
