You're Pregnant! Now What?

  • Print
  • Make a date with your ob-gyn. Most initial prenatal checkups occur between weeks 6 and 10.
  • Skip that third Starbucks run. Most experts say you should stick to just one or two 8-ounce cups of java a day.
  • Kick those cigarettes to the curb. No excuses. Hey, there's never been a better time to quit, right?
  • Cut out cocktails. Stock up on Pellegrino or any other special beverage you can swap in for that occasional round of Riesling.
  • Get the green light for your meds and skincare products -- even occasional over-the-counter stuff like pain-relievers.
  • Pop those prenatal vitamins. They contain the right amount of folic acid and iron, which are critical in baby's early development.
  • Pass on those spicy tuna rolls -- the raw fish may contain potentially harmful bacteria for your growing baby.
  • Same goes for undercooked meat, poultry, and eggs.
  • Skip farmer's market apple cider, unless you know it's pasteurized. Likewise for soft cheeses like brie.
  • Have your partner be kitty's primo caretaker. Her litter box may harbor a dangerous kind of bacteria.
