Anyone who will be caring for your baby should take a class in infant CPR -- including you, your husband, and any caregivers like grandparents or babysitters. Since unintentional choking and suffocation are the leading causes of all injury deaths for infants under age 1, it's absolutely worth taking the two- to four-hour course.
During the class, you will learn how to recognize when a baby needs rescue breathing, how to start CPR, and how to care for an infant who's choking. Even if you're on your second or third child and have taken the course before, it's a good idea to take a refresher class for more up-to-date CPR instructions and information, since recommendations do change. Hopefully you'll never have to use what you learn, but at least you'll be confident that you can care for your baby in an emergency. --Ilisa Cohen
