My daughter is almost 2 years old and she doesn't talk. She can hear, but she doesn't talk. She makes sounds like "ooo aaa bababa mum" instead of saying words like "No," "More," "Mama," or "Dada." Is this normal?
I'd be concerned. Toddlers vary in their speech and language skills at this age, but your daughter should be able to use more words by now. The good news is that every child age 0-3 in the U.S. is entitled to a free developmental evaluation. Ask her pediatrician for a referral to the local "Part C Provider" for Early Intervention Services. Don't be afraid of these folks -- they're terrific. Your daughter will play with specialists -- with you participating, too -- to determine where she is developmentally. If she qualifies, Early Intervention Services does wonders. Just don't wait -- the earlier services start, the better your daughter will be. Good luck!
