Got sniffles you just can't shake? Few pregnant women make it through these 40 weeks without catching a cold at some point. While there are some medications that are safe during pregnancy, you should try treating your cold naturally before hitting up the drugstore aisle. Getting plenty of rest (you're probably much more tired now to begin with) and lots of fluids will give your immune system the energy it needs to fight your cold germs. Using a saline nasal mist (which is a plain water-salt solution you spritz up your nose) a few times a day can help ease congestion and clear the stuffiness.
But if your symptoms are making it hard for you to sleep or get through the day, check with your doctor. He may recommend you try Tylenol cough and cold products or a decongestant like Sudafed (which is safe until the third trimester, but you should only use it for a day or two). To relieve a cough, doctors may suggest a suppressant like Robitussin DM. You should avoid cough and cold products with ibuprofen and aspirin and cough syrups with lots of alcohol.
While a cold can make you uncomfortable, it doesn't pose a threat to your baby. You may notice that your body takes a little longer to fight off your cold now that you're pregnant though -- and that's totally normal, since your immune system is naturally weaker while you're expecting. But catching the flu can be more serious during pregnancy, since it can turn into pneumonia. Protect yourself and your baby by getting a flu vaccine if you're pregnant during flu season (October through March).
