Can I stop taking my iron pills?
My iron pills make me constipated. Is it okay if I stop taking them during my pregnancy?

It's not a good idea, especially without your doctor's approval. Iron requirements skyrocket during pregnancy due to your baby's oxygen needs. Since many women don't get enough iron even before pregnancy (it's virtually impossible to get all the iron you need from food right now), the extra iron in your prenatal supplements is crucial.

Include lots of iron-rich foods in your diet such as beef, fortified breakfast cereal, and red kidney beans. You can also enhance your body's ability to absorb iron by including a vitamin-C-rich food or drink with your meal. To alleviate constipation, drink eight to 12 cups of fluid per day, eat plenty of high-fiber foods, and exercise regularly. --Sally Kuzemchak

I had constipation problems before I took my Iron pills so imagine how I felt when he put me on them. I took it in the morning with orange juice and then starting at lunch I would try to fill up on fiber. I ate a lot of spinach salads, fruit, I drank water and prune juice, I ate fiber bars for snacks. I also take Colace if I feel a problem coming on.

My doctor recommended using Colate (a stool softner) to help avoid constipation. Of course, eating more fruits and veggies helps a great deal. Corn and spinach work wonders for me!

I am always anemic but can not take iron, I have tried everything but still get nauseous and constipated. I just take a prenatal vitamin and my doctor knows this. Iron pills are awful.

I have to take iron and vitamin c at lunch and dinner and my prenatal vitamins in the morning because of anemia. Since it's made me very constipated, i eat prunes and my dr. put me on senna and colace which you might want to talk to your doctor about.

eat more fiber, but not at the same time you take your iron. it can block the absorbtion of the iron. try somthing with vit.C it can aid in the absortion of iron.also drink more water and veggies.
