Is it safe to tan during pregnancy?

Is it safe to tan during pregnancy?
Submitted by American Baby Team

You probably already know that tanning -- whether it's out at the beach or indoors in a tanning bed -- isn't a good idea for anyone, since plenty of research shows that it can cause skin cancer, not to mention wrinkles and other skin issues. But pregnant women are especially sensitive to the sun, and too much exposure can cause or worsen skin discoloration (called melasma) that many moms-to-be are already prone to. You don't have to be a hermit, but you should wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and sit under an umbrella or in the shade when you're outside for more than 20 minutes or so. Since melasma can take up to one year after delivery to fade, it's worth skipping a summer basking in the sun while you're expecting.

You're also more likely to become dehydrated now that you're pregnant, so you may tend to feel overheated or dizzy when you're outside for a while. Make sure to get plenty of water and snacks, and if you start to feel woozy, step indoors to rest and rehydrate. --Stacey Stapleton

Shhhhh! We will wreck a whole industry if this gets out.....It's NEVER safe to tan...pregnant or NOT..The more time you spend in the sun when you are 25....the older you will look when you are 50..MOISTURIZE and stay OUT of the sun, unprotected!!!

You know your body like no one else. Just listen to what it's telling you and you'll be fine. Nothing wrong with soaking up some vitamin D just don't over do it!

It's okay to sunbath outside to get a good dose of Vitamin D which is the ideal way to get it. All you need is the same amount that is suggested by doctor's which is between 15min to 25min per day then may put sunscreen or cover up for the rest of the duration but I wouldn't use a tanning bed. I do this and I have yet had any skin discolorization.

I'm still tanning and my docs says its A-Ok.

My doctor suggested that I skip the tanning bed for a while... you can get the "mask of pregnacy" on your face that could last up to a year. I don't want dicolorations on my face. I'm just going to skip it and play it safe, but it really comes down to what YOUR doctor says. He knows you and your personal situation.

My doctor says it is fine as long as you keep it under 10 minutes and don't get over heated. Temps over 102 are harmful to the baby.

tanning isn't safe to begin with, let alone while pregnant. tanning beds are a great way to develop skin cancer. same goes for laying out in the sun with tanning oils, and lotions. keep visiting that tanning booth, or laying out in the sun for hours at a time to get that "gorgeous glowing tan". and when you are 50 years old, your skin will look and feel like leather!seriously, my aunt died from melanoma when i was 15. it started out on her arm, and spread to her brain in less than 2 months.
